Is it true that tonight is the deadline for using the Mo Taylor injury exception? Has anyone heard if the Rockets are going to just let it go rather than take on a multi-year player that will hurt our cap next year?

I just heard on 610 from Rudy T "We need another big man.". Sounds like there will be a trade or something today.

Leon Smith is a free agent. :D

Seriously---what's the holdup with Mason? He's not a 5, but he'll be a better scorer from the frontline than anyone you can suit up now to start the season.

Isn't Mase demanding at least mid-level exception money? We don't have that much, though I'd love to get him. My guess is he'll eventually end up in Milwaukee.

Did anyone else notice that Collier didn't play last night? Was it a an injury, or just a coincidence (that our Medical Exception expires today and he was a DNP last night)? Just a SWAG!

Last I heard Milwaukee is only offering Mase the veteran's exception of $1 million. He wants a 4 year deal for around $20 million. Obviously, there have been no takers. First off, there just aren't any teams out there who are interested in Mase for 4 years. I'm pretty sure he's 35 years old so a GM would have to be pretty bold to pony up that kind of scrilla for someone who will be 39 when the contract runs out. Furthermore, with the luxury tax in effect teams that have shown interest in Mase, like Milwaukee and Philly would go over the cap if they gave him anything over the veteran's exception.

My thought here is that Mase and his agent are probably getting a bit concerned at this point. After all who would have thought that an veteran forward who was on the All-star team last season, no less, would still be unsigned a week before the season begins. If he's smart , he realizes that a one-year deal for $3.25 million (Rockets injury exception) is probably the best he's going to do at this point. However, I still see this as a long-shot. Rudy and CD have expressed 0 interest in Mase to this point. His rather colorful background doesn't really fit with the types of players CD has signed ever since he finally pulled the plug on Vernon.

Personally, I would love Mase. He's a versatile forward, who can bang with the big boys down low and hit the open J. He's also a very good passer out of the post. I think his thug persona has been blown way out of proportion overr the years. I have never heard of him being a problem in the locker room. I DO know that on occasion he has a tendency to complain about teamates without actually naming names after a tough loss. If the Rockets can convince him to sign a 0ne-year deal for the medical exception, then they should ink him in a hurry.

The Rocks are gonna try to swing some 3 team deal where we sent our exception to somebody else in exchange for a player...a center. That's the only way to pickup a servicable 5.

If they can't do that, then they'll let it expire. It doesn't look like they can afford Mase and Gatling isn't versitile enough to play the 5 spot effectively.

So someone is willing to trade a player for an exception that will expire at 11 pm tonight? Sounds really doubtful.

If Milwaukee dumps a salary like Johnson's or Williams on us, they might be able to sign mason with the 4.5 mil exception WITHOUT paying the luxury tax, I suppose....

sounds like a win-win scenario, even though I don't particulary care about Williams... Johnson on the other hand, fits our needs perfectly.

IF it works capwise, of course.

No. The way I understand it is they get a player from us, and the exception is used to allow us to take a player from them that makes 3.25 mil more than our player to balance salaries.

Assuming the exception can be traded it makes A LOT of sense for a team to trade for the exception. The exception dumps salary off of the team's books.

Of course the exception can be traded, even if not directly.

suppose we ship langhi's 500k salary for ervin johnson's 3+ mil salary. we can do that, as we have the injury exception, and as a result, the bucks payroll would become smaller, and they could sign mason without paying the tax, as they still have their 4.5 mil exception...

that's just an example of how the exception could be useful for another team.

    get on the phone CD!:D

I'd consider it a good use of the exception to pick up EJ if that were possible. But it is hard to believe Milwaukee would let him go even though they are reportedly lusting over Mase. Of course, George Karl is their coach (long-term now that he signed his record breaking contract extension), and he has not shown himself to be married to the pivot during his coaching career.
