I have a Dell laptop that's 2 or 3 years old. Just recently it will only run while plugged into an ac adapter. The second it's pulled out it shuts down.

Dead battery? How much do the replacements typically cost or should I just tell my wife we need a Mac Powerbook Pro?

Your lucky you even got 2-3 years.. They are normally crap after 1 when the warranty expires (what a coincidence) But they can range from anywhere from $50-$300 depending if your ok with generic or oem and also the capacity..

I had this happen too but I think it was bc I left my labtop in my car for a few days..

My car is black on black so the immense heat screwed it up..

It did the same thing for a while so I bought a new battery. Didn't help and eventually my motherboard went kaput.

if you primarily use your computer w/ the ac adapter attchech and only infrequently use battery power, battery deterioation may occur fater if teh battery is consistantly chaged at 100%. lowering the charge threshholds for you battery and periodically resetting teh battery gauge will help increase it's lifespan."

Go to the boot-up menu. If the system shows the adapter as an unknown device, just replace the adapter.
