I am treading on Hotoddie turf, but here comes one more variation on the McGrady - Francis trade scenario. I believe the money is even if we send the TE to Orlando, and everybody gets a big star.

    Steve Francis to Boston.
    Paul Pierce to Orlando.
    Re-signed Tracy McGrady to Houston.
    Houston TE to Orlando.
Orlando sends its #31 (first in second round) to Boston.

And our TE, which can be used for another front line player.

I dont see why Boston would trade Paul Pierce for Steve Francis and a second rounder. They'd be better off keeping Pierce and getting him some help through the draft. Orlando would just be the same team only with Pierce instead of T-Mac. I dont see why either of them would do this trade.

IMO, Houstons; motivation for this move far exceeds either of the other teams. I'm sure we'd do it, I am much less sure Boston or Orlando would.

    Thumbs,

I still cannot see the Magic making any deal involving McGrady (excpet for Kobe) that does not involve Hill.

How could the Magic possibly be stupid enough to move their most valuable commodity without also dumping their worst albatross?

If McGrady wants to opt out, then the Magic get nothing. When it comes down to it, they will have to take whats on the table otherwise they are left with a huge hole.

You have a good point. Just for fun I am trying to stimulate new ways for the board to be looking at trade scenarios that don't force us to gut our whole team, which a McGrady & Hill trade would do.

Francis imo is a better player than Pierce. I could see Boston doing but I don't know if Orlando would want to give up McGrady for Pierce.

So you think a player who gets more turnovers and shoots worse is better?

Pierce is a good player and a lot of people would put him ahead of Steve, I think Boston does too.

Could you make it any more obvious that you had that argument planned before you even said that Francis is betetr tha Pierce?

Wasn't it you that woudl always argue that stats don't tell the whole story?

AI shoots worse and rebounds less than Francis but is considered as a better player.

Your TO stat is based upon the 2003-04 season only. For their careers, Francis commits 4.48 TO's/48min to Pierce's 3.78.

And Boston's not alone. Pierce was 3rd team All NBA in 2001-2002 & 2002-03 and always receives way more votes for All NBA than does Francis. The latter having never made the All NBA team.

We wouldn't be necessarily be gutting our whole team to get TMac. McGrady and Hill make ~$30m. Subtract out Francis's $11.5m and the fact that we can absorb an additional $6.99m with our TE makes the salary difference ~$10.m. Throw in Mobley and Spoon (1 year remaining) and voila. If we are one of McGrady's teams of choice, you're a FA PG away from the same team as last season...

    1) FA / Wilks (Gaines)
    2) JJ / Pike / AGriff
    3) TMac / Boki
    4) Cato / Taylor
    5) Yao / Cato

Actually Mobes and Spoon make enough and ORL gets our $6.99 TE, maybe they would throw in Reece Gaines. :)

Besides, there is a precedence for swapping 2 star players but I'm not aware of too many 3 star player swaps to 3 teams.

I don’t think Orlando is looking for an established player like Francis or Pierce in exchange for Mcgrady. If they can’t win with Mcgrady, they’re not going to win with two players that are not as good as him. If Orlando decides to trade Mcgrady, they might as well start over from scratch the way Denver and Phoenix did.

The rumored Phoenix deal involving Joe Johnson, Phoenix’s lottery pick, and cap space is probably what Orlando is looking for. The Rockets should contact Chicago, Washington, or Charlotte and see if they are willing to give up their lottery picks for Francis. The Bulls and Wizards are probably sick of waiting on lottery picks to pan out and want to win now. Package the lottery pick along with Cuttino and the trade exception and send it to Orlando.

    Cuttino Mobley > Joe Johnson
CHI/WAS/CHA lottery pick > PHO lottery pick

It's T-Mac who wants out. Otherwise Orlando will never trade him.

Mobley is not considered better than Joe Johnson by the majority.

    I'm not saying YOU don't or I don't, but I'm saying the majority don't.

Besides, they wouldn't be able to make that trade, Joe Jhnosn makes around 3M, while McGrady makes around 13M I believe.

They would have to throw in Marion. For MAX money, if I'm Orlando, I'd rather have Steve Francis, who starts in the All Star game and is more capable of carrying a team.

If Phoenix offers Marion, Joe Johnson and their pick, then everyone's screwed. However, if Phoenix offers that, McGrady won't re-sign, seeing as they'll be a just like the Magic - not good enough.

I think Orlando may like a Francis/Mobley/Cato/TE for McGrady/Hill/Lue/Declerq package. I'd normally be reluctant to give Cato up, but we're getting T-Mac, so I'd be ok with it.

    Yao/Declerq
MoT/Weatherspoon (Would be excelelnt to sign Dice)
    JJ/Hill/Boki
    McGrady
    Lue/Hill/second rounder/minimum FA
