I'm not supposed to be on the internet at work and I just laughed out loud when that guy hit him on the face with the snowball. Played it off like I was coughing. That situation just got out of hand.
When they started chanting "Don't bring a gun to a snowball fight!" I was cracking up. And then cops wonder why we hate them. What a loser.
It was a stupid thing to do but those people are r****ded...the sad part is there all like 30, and there's no kids around at a snowball fight...
Good thing cops are the only ones carrying legal handguns in DC. They are the only ones professional enough.
I wonder if those civilians were having a snowball fight amongst themselves first when the cops tried to stop them and then got assaulted with snowballs themselves. Or if the civilians just started throwing snowballs at the street cop first for no reason. If it was the latter, I would side with the cops here. NO ONE likes to get hit with a snowball!
To those of you who side with the cops, can you explain how it is an appropriate response to pull a gun because you were hit with a snowball?
We don't see what happens before the video but it appeared he had his gun out before he got hit by the snowball. If what the cop says is true the crowd was throwing snowballs and it was hitting the vehicles. Whether it was intentional or not I would not be too happy people pegging my car with snowballs regardless if it was causing damage. Plus you don't add onto the hostility by pegging someone with a gun with a snowball. Two wrongs don't make a right. As far as they know it's a guy with a radio in civilian clothing and a gun. Probably safe to assume he's a cop but do you want to take that chance? And if the guy who was detained wasn't the one who threw the snowball, then it was pretty cowardly of the guy who did throw it not own up to it. Then again he might have left the scene already. To me it just appeared the cops were doing more to ease the situation than to instigate like some of the individuals out there. So what? he pulled a gun. Do you really need to throw snowballs that bad? Invite everyone to your backyard then.
Amazing that some people are defending the cop. They probably shouldn't be throwing snowballs at cars but you are needlessly escalating the situation when you pull a gun out. I would expect that the cop be punished for this.
The "cop" who pulled the gun has been pretty much fired by the DC cops.. and the DC cops have apologized on his behalf. If you say, "I'm with the cops on this one.." shame on you. The guy was driving a freakin Hummer... and pulled out a gun because someone hit it with a snowball. I know several DC cops an have been on ride-alongs with them.. and this is not par for the course. Most DC cops I've known over the years are very level-headed and reasonable people. But this guy is ridiculous, and I commend The District for letting him go.
Don't defend the majority of cops around here as being reasonable, normal human beings. That talk just isn't allowed.
