I never liked David Robinson as a player not because of his game but because he was apart of the San Antonio Spurs. But as a person David Robinson is tops on my list as some of the few people in sports you have to worry about.Every since he came into the NBA in 1989 he has shown what it was like not to be a playa or change with the times. As the NBA entered into the "bling-bling" I got a Hunner Bigger than life era,David never changed he sayed the course. He stuck to what got him here. And he deserves everything he has gotten up to this point as a player. I can remember when David Robinson went down back in 1996-97 season and everybody thought including myself, that D-Rob was just playin hurt and the Spurs were playin possum to get the number one pick in the draft and select a unknown none-flashy player with skills and foot work like Olajuwon and the unorthodox back board shot that cant be beat. And his name Tim Duncan. After they got Duncan you could see S.A. go from just good to greatness.David never changed his game he never was talkin about he wanted the ball more because he was the franchise player. You never heard David say this is my team or he's a rookie let him earn his spot.Nope David just moved over and let the team get built around Tim and two years later albeit a strike shortened season, the Spurs bombrushed the league and snatched that elusive NBA crown.Just like before I was critical of the title and how the Spurs got it.But as time went on I realized just like the Celtics dominated the 50's & 60's, the Spurs dominated that season and the play-offs.You cant atke that title away from thme just as you cant take away the two that Houston has.Everybody knows that but they are afriad to admit it.David Robinson has shown the class and gentelmen-esque style that is missing in today's NBA. And too many of the supposed stars like Kobe Francis,Garnnet,T-Mac,Iverson and whom else you can name dont have the class that David Robinson displayed day in and day out.You can say what you wanna say about how boring the Spurs offesne is and how dul Tim Duncan is.But on thing you mus not forget is that they dominated the league and played within thier system. No one person said they wanted more than the other. They were lead by the one person who I wouldnt mind having on my team any day over Shaquille or Yao.And that is David Robinson. Not because of his game on the court but his demeanor off of it.His faith has made me understand why he is the person he is.And being a Christian living in the NBA and seeing all that you see is the best thing you can have.God surpasses all the things that that NBA life can offer you.I'm not saying David Robinson is perfect but when it comes to living life in the NBA David showed us that you didnt need to always be on B.E.T.'s "How I'm Living or MTV's "Cribs" to be a baller. I remember at last years All-Star Game D-Rob wasdoin interviews and he was talkin about how everybody had a click of people wit em everywhere they went and he only had his kids with him. That right there showed me that just because you are in the crowd doesent mean you have to follow and be like the in crowd.LeBron could learn alot from David Robinson.I think every young player who is coming in to the league or even has 2 years in the league should take notes from David and aspire to add what he has done to thier lives. And then they can see that maybbe not being the center of attention isnt so bad. Because you cna still recive what God has for you once you just go along with his plan.I thank David Robinson for what he has done for the NBA and for being a player that everybody often over looks because he doesent grab the headlines with eye popping dunks or buzzer beating three's.No look passes and anything else fancy you could name.I thank David for being David.Thank You Lord.
Man, not to sound like a clone, but hit the return key and space bar every so often. That was a hard read.
David Robinson is an amazing person and a truly inspiring figure. His integrity and character are unquestioned, and he is a class act. And let's not forget that, in the mid-1990s, he was one of the top 2-3 players in the league.
I agree, the way that David stepped aside immediately and let Tim Duncan lead the team, I gained alot of respect for him. Robinson has always been my favorite non-Rockets player. Just a classy, and yes, I used the word classy, guy. And this post didn't even mention the millions of dollars he's donated to charities. A truly inspiring thing, as I could never see myself giving nearly 10 million dollars away, even if I was filthy rich. Eh, but I guess that's karma, cause I'm never gonna see 10 million dollars...
David is what he is and there couldnt have been a more perfect city to have drafted him. Really doe...
I have never been a Robinson fan but he is a class guy and one of the great centers of all time. Hakeem was also a classy individual. Another class act and one of my favorite players is Alonzo Mourning. He does so much off the court and is such a class act but gets little recognition. He set up various charities in the Miami area including building a community center for kids. These guys are truly class guys and I was happy for Robinson even though I have never been a fan of his. Hopefully ZO can land in Dallas or New Jersey and battle for a title next season.
Man, if I were 4 feet taller and cut like hell, I'd kick David Robinson's 'classy' ass up and down the Riverwalk. F*ck the Spers.
This is what I don't get. I've always regarded Hakeem as one of the classiest players in the NBA. Always humble, always giving his teammates credit, always complimenting his opponents, active in charitable causes, etc...pure class. I have no problem at all recognizing that even though he played for a rival of the team I follow. And not when it was his team winning a title instead of my favorite. It would have been nice to see him finish his career with the franchise with whom he had enjoyed much glory, but alas in pro sports today that is more the exception than the rule. And he only left Houston because he wanted to spend his final years competing for another championship. Both men were classy individuals who obviously understood that their celebrity had an impact on individuals within their team's community and without as well. It's a sad commentary on our society that someone would let their fanaticism lead them to diminishing an individual like that simply because they played for a rival.
Oh my god, think of the children! Think of the CHILDREN!!! Relax man, its just a jealous rockets fan anonymously blowing off steam on a rockets bbs. No societal lessons or commentary should be drawn therefrom.
Guess I must be goin' to hell then or somethin' Oh well, as long as I can say f*ck the Spers all the way down. 'Classy' b*stard...
Robinson is indeed a class act. Classy guy, who played for a team who surrounded him (post-Rodman) with other classy players. It's great to see a player go out on top, who could honestly play in the league for anotehr couple years.
I bet you are just running around to every message board now that the spurs won the title. Strange you coming around so much to gloat your win...typical 'classy' spurs fan. Tell me, were you going around all the message boards when the spurs tanked their asses off to get Tim Duncan? Just curious.
I've been visiting this forum for a while no matter how the Spurs season ends. So now it's gloating to respond to criticism of the Spurs? Right. Ha.
