    From ESPN Insider:

Is it worth it for our coaches to to take a chance on this guy or is he destined to be a bust?

    I'd deal Yao.

I read this early and have to admit, it peaked my interest a bit. Thabeet is a bust but just look at Roy Hibbert, he started out pretty bad but has improved over the last two season to now being an all-star type big man. If he can dedicate himself to a good workout program, get himself in the gym and surround himself with good big men coaches then he has a chance to be good.

I would take a chance on him, maybe an expiring and a 2nd for Thabeet possibly even add Taylor.

    Guess that means Gasol's untouchable.

But having a should-coulda-woulda trio of A. Randolph, J.Hill and H. Thabeet sounds too tempting.

Someone send this to Morey. If the Timberwolves get him for their 3rd string PG that would be a huge steal, just like the Mike Beasley deal.

Thabeet's got size and athleticism that you can't teach. If Roy Hibbert can turn out to be a quality center after some time I can see Thabeet being one too.

Get this guy on the team. He could be Yao's replacement.

They probably want a future 1st but would settle for an early 2nd and cash (we own the Clippers 2nd round pick this upcoming year). The kid is a serious project though. He is still a good shotblocker, something we don't have. He needs a lot of strength training and good coaching. For a team that is rebuilding, he is worth the risk.

Doesn't Thabeet have local connections? High school here? Family? Could just be my imagination. It's definitely my laziness. Now I have to go look at the dude's bio page on nba.com.

Whatever happens with the kid, just a quick aside: When will teams learn that very tall + player does not equal Next Olajuwon? (Although a couple of bigs did take a slide in last summer's draft, Alabi and Whiteside.)

Wasn't there a thread last season, someone supposedly sighting Morey and Thabeet together (at the Aquarium no less)? The reactions to whomever started the thread ranging from "liar!" to "so what, doesn't mean anything".

EDIT: Aha. Someone posted a link to the Aquarium thread.

Gasol is and has been untouchable.

Thabeet, on the other hand, is an interesting prospect. He looks like another Deke to me. I think with some tutoring and development from a good big man coach, he could become a shot-blocking paint menace on par with Deke, but don't see him ever developing much beyond put backs on the offensive end. I would have to consider giving up Hill for him if Memphis came calling. I would rather see CD and company working on developing Thabeet than Hill. I don't Memphis has the resources we do to develop bigs and we've done about all we can do with Hill. Besides, we've got Patterson, who is already and will continue to be miles better than Hill.

Wow, that's awful management by the Grizz, if they end up essentially wasting a 2nd overall pick on an expiring contract.

This isn't a bad trade at all but it would signal a shift in philosophy and probably a rebuilding period...which is okay by me. Mayo isn't the scorer Martin is but will put up points and defends better then Kev while your getting a big man and at least mid 1st rd pick as well.

Martin would fit perfectly with Conley, Gay, Z-Bo and Gasol, in fact probably makes them a playoff contender this year and one for sure next year.

Grizzlies aren't in win-now mode and wouldn't want Martin. Xavier Henry was their lotto pick this year and they are probably hoping he is the future SG for them. Only thing they are missing now is a young PF. I'm sure they would love Patrick Patterson but no way would we give him up for Thabeet. Mayo would be nice but its kinda redundant next to Courtney Lee.

    Conley
    Henry
    Gay
    PF
    Gasol

Sorry the Grizz would be making a bad move giving up on him so early in his career. Big men especially centers take longer to develop.

I'd only do it if the price is right.

....I remember this past summer one of the comments I read on an NBA blog(cant' remember which it was now) was to take a look at the tweets of Thabeet and the ones from Durant and try and figure out who was the player heading to the top and who was the one heading out of the league. It went something like at 10am Durant was finishing up his first workout of the day and was going to go grab a bite and take a nap before his next workout. Meanwhile, at roughly the same time Thabeet was tweeting that he just woke up, and was trying to figure out what he wanted to do with the day. I'm paraphrasing heavily, but you get the idea.

I wouldn't mind Thabeet as a last big on the bench type of player like a Jefferies or Dorsey but at $5mil a year, that's a little too much for so little production. As an aside, I can think of two teams who might find some use for him - Miami and OKC. If Miami can get anything out of him, it would be a huge score for them as it doesn't take much to provide a defensive/rebounding upgrade inside. For OKC, it might be just the type of encouraging environment Thabeet needs - strong leadership on the team, good management, and the team is full of gym rats who might push Thabeet into some better development. People talk about how good Presti is but at some point he is going to HAVE to take a gamble on a big and this is a classic low risk, high reward one for a team that doesn't have an awful payroll right now and can afford to take a chance on Hasheem.
