Just what the title says: from Nancies.org Solo Tour Being Planned Nov.11.2002 For the first time in DMB's career history, Dave Matthews is planning a solo tour. College students from around the country have told us that promoters have gotten in touch with their schools, inquiring as to whether the schools would be interested in booking Dave Matthews in the months of March or April. The price is reported to be in the vicinity of $50,000, with tickets being available only to students with a cost roughly the same as tickets to see the full band during this year's tour. Band management has declined to comment at this time in response to a query from nancies.org, so none of this information has been confirmed by sources other than student event coordinators from a variety of colleges. So what do you think DMB fans? Personally, I'm a bit surprised, but not overwhelmingly so. I don't really fear for the future of the band or anything -- in some ways I'm a bit surprised no one has done solo tours in the past, I mean it has been about 12 years since the band came together. I really wish it were a Dave and Tim tour though. Dave solo is good, but Dave and Tim is where it's at. Still though, should be pretty good. Dave's done plenty of solo shows before, but never a full-fledged tour. Probably will just be a month or two long tour. It also seems to me to kindof be a bit of a nostaligia trip for Dave. When the band started, he played LOTS of solo gigs at frat houses and college parties. It also probably has a bit to do with Boyd's upcoming tour and solo album -- can't tour as a band when he's on tour. DMB seems to be becoming more of a summer touring band, which really suits it PERFECTLY. I was thinking about that earlier today -- how much fun it is to sit out in the heat, with all the smoke and beer and people and music and everything, and just enjoy the whole experience.
Ironic that a supporter of the Corps, is saying that I would fit in at an N*Suck concert, who I hate with a passion.
i used to despise dave matthews, but through the power of my roommate, i've actually grown to like him - especially his cd w/ tim reynolds. it'd be a good concert, but im sure i wouldnt spend the $40-50 it would take to attend. anyways, i'm just waiting for jack johnson to announce that he's coming to austin so i could immediately purchase those tickets.
It's strange that he hasn't toured solo before. He came to Cornell (2 1/2 years ago) the ONE semester I wasn't there. It was just Tim Reynolds and him. Personally, I think Dave NEEDS Tim Reynolds on his tour. Just him on guitar and vocals would probably suck, IMO, hence I think touring solo (REALLY solo that is) is a mistake. Now, it's not that Dave is horrible or anything, but even big stars need a supporting cast (and he has one of the best). For an example of things done right, just look at Trey Anastasio (my hero). (side note: Phish is back! Yaaaaayyy!!) Now, will I buy the inevitable CD? Of course. I'm such a Dave Matthews w****... I have EVERY Dave CD loaded into my Ipod. (Yes, I make myself sick.) I think I need an intervention...
IMHO, for his music, this is like asking "who will toast the melba toast?" Answer: any available hack. Not to diminish how moving or catchy it is for some people, but from a technical standpoint, it's not exactly Shostakovich!
The reason I askes is that if other guys are playing instruments, then he's not really touring "solo". Sounds to me like he just wants to make a little extra cash for himself by not having to pay the musicians much. He could probably get a garage band somewhere and pay them a few grand for the entire tour, and they would do it in a heartbeat just to get the noteriety of playing on the same stage as Dave Matthews. Either that, or he could just sing to the background music being played off a tape, which would mean that a bunch of poor college kids are listening to a glorified karaoke singer... professional integrity, anyone?
It's Dave Solo meaning he plays guitar and sings. It's a different spin on some songs, but Dave's done lots of solo appearances in the past 3 years, and has done a bunch of solo shows over his career. They are good, not as good as full DMB or D+T, but still great!
Exactly. Heck, FWIW, Dave himself is really the least talented musician in the band, although he's improved his guitar playing quite substantially from DMB's beginnings. The name Dave Matthews Band was really intended to be a temporary fill-in until they came up with something better. They never did
But the best thing about DMB is their 'Jam Quality.' All their songs sound like live performances, and, with the instrumentals, their sound is very similar to a good old-fashion 'Jam session.' Their music has a Jazz-like quality, which is a big draw for me. But Dave sitting on a stool, playing a guitar....? I don't know about that.
Don't worry!!! Dave Solo is good!!! It's not as good as full DMB or D+T, but it's still good!!! Tomorrow I'll encode a Dave Solo show and post it here for people to hear.
We'll see Vengeance. Purely coincidental, but I have 'Crash' in my 'Work Rotation' of CDs today. Eat your heart out!
