I thought this topic deserved its own thread, it's from SSAC15.

"Analytics does not help in FA negotiation because neither side trusts the other side's data."

That's why Morey is so good at trading but not so at getting FAs.

Morey has been pretty good in FA negotiations, it's just there's a massive home court advantage for the home team.

He had home court advantage with Dragic.

Actually, come to think of it. What free agent players has Morey retained? In fact, there weren't many guys on the team who got to free agency BEFORE they got traded.

Morey's comment kind of confirms my suspicion that he tries to avoid negotiating free agents as much as he can. Trading players away before their contracts are up is not just for flexibility. It is also for avoiding dealing with free agency.

Morey's edge over other GMs has always been his wealth of information and his ability to digest it. So when he negotiates for a trade, he has that advantage over the other side. Free agency takes away that edge and he is pretty much on level ground in the negotiation.

I love this stuff... just a small taste of what I want to read in his memoirs someday.

Only cheke would care to criticize Morey's preferred choice of communication with other GM's

You only give up information that is already out dated. Morey is on to the next one while he talk publicly about methods he has probably already retired.

Morey got Dwight. Pat Riley did better than that, but who else got big name guys to move to their team?

Morey got Dwight mostly because we already had Harden. And oh yeah, it's also because the Lakers screwed up. Dwight was perceived to be a damaged good by some people at that time (which might turn out to be true after all). He didn't get Dwight the first time he tried when the field was wide open and Dwight was at a premium.

Anyway, I wasn't just thinking about big name FA. What middle class FAs did Morey sign and which Rockets FAs did he retain? Not too many significant ones.

James Dolan got Melo to force a trade to NY. Dan Gilbert got LeBron to sign and got Love to force a trade to Cleveland.
