This might be old but worth watching if you haven't heard of him before. If only we could unlock our brain...

Its still crazy to comprehend the notion that he does math without seeing them as numbers and instead sees them visually as shapes and objects. That's just a completely different level that I'll never be able to grasp.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia

Synesthesia (also spelled synæsthesia or synaesthesia, plural synesthesiae or synaesthesiae)—from the Ancient Greek σύν (syn), "together," and αἴσθησις (aisthēsis), "sensation"—is a neurologically-based condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway

    Interesting stuff.

I watched this on tv a couple of years ago, I think. There's a point in the show (if it's the same show) where Tammet meets Kim Peak (the real "Rainman"). Tammet's abilities are pretty incredible, but others are capable of doing many of the things he's done, and to an even more extreme degree. Peak's abilities were incredible, though. It's sad that he wasn't able to communicate well enough to be studied like Tammett can. I think on the show, Peak told Tammett that one day he may end up being as good as he was. That comment made me crack up. :) Sadly, Peak passed away this past winter.

I think I've seen this guy on 60 minutes before. He learned Icelandic in a few days, which is incredible. Interesting to see how the mind is capable of perceiving concepts like mathematics.

HBO recently showed a movie about the life of Temple Grandin (starring Claire Danes as Grandin), which is quite interesting if you know anything about her. She's one of the few autistics that has been able to break the communication barriers down enough to really write thought-provoking books about her theories of how animals perceive reality, which she considers to be like her own experiences, she is exceptionally intuitive around animals and possesses the ability to understand what they are thinking / feeling. Very cool.

There was a documentary on people with these incredible abilities on the discovery channel or some similar channel that featured this guy who could take a helicopter tour of a city and then recreate a drawing in stunning detail of everything he had seen, there was also a guy who was in a street gang for most of his life and then at an older age he bumped his head and then turned into some avant-garde street artist. There was also a French genius who had created an entire city with a population of hundreds of millions and drawn the whole thing in amazing detail.

Amazing stuff as well as other people. I don't get it, what makes this person different from anyone else physically. Why is that someone like him is able to unlock such intelligence whereas others settle with basic math. I'm assuming most other people have the same physical components necessary to do the calculations he does, yet we can't. Why do humans have such capabilities if we aren't able to use it? Makes me wonder how to unlock my potential (if any).

Thanks so much for posting this Cowboy_Bebop. I love documentaries, and especially topics like the mind and brain.

Amazing... and just on a side note the Professor in the second video is Borat's cousin.

We have the ability to take a rocket engine and put it on a car, and then we'd be able to go fast as hell, right. We'd get to work in like 1 minute! Unfortunately, with so much power and speed, we aren't capable of designing the rest of the systems around the engine, and then the infrastructure needed for people to drive around with it, etc., etc. occasionally some guy or team will actually put it on a car and try and break a record or something, but the availability of the power doesn't mean its smart design to use it.

...maybe a bad analogy, and I'm no scientist, but I think our brains have large potential in regards to "computing power" because we need all that potential there just to be able to do a lot of what we already do.

every once in a while some wires get mixed, and you end up with a savant, but usually that savant, while really powerful in one area, can't control the ride, so to speak, in many others.

No I understand...It just so shocking to see this guy do complicated calculations in his head like its nothing, when most people would struggle with basic math in their head. I only watched the first video, but the guy seems relatively normal (no less then the San Antonio wolfpacks), it doesn't seem he's missing any loose screws, and doesn't seem any less inept at any one area then any other "normal" person.

Damn it, someone increase my brain power, just by a little bit, I promise to use it for good.
