Watch the video. I couldn't hear the ringtone. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/13274669/?GT1=8211 Students find ring tone adults can't hear High-pitched ‘Mosquito’ originally created to disperse youngsters NEW YORK - Students are using a new ring tone to receive messages in class — and many teachers can't even hear the ring. Some students are downloading a ring tone off the Internet that is too high-pitched to be heard by most adults. With it, high schoolers can receive text message alerts on their cell phones without the teacher knowing. As people age, many develop what's known as aging ear — a loss of the ability to hear higher-frequency sounds. The ring tone is a spin-off of technology that was originally meant to repel teenagers — not help them. A Welsh security company developed the tone to help shopkeepers disperse young people loitering in front of their stores while leaving adults unaffected. The company called their product the "Mosquito." Donna Lewis, a teacher in Manhattan, says her colleague played the ring for a classroom of first-graders — and all of them could hear it, while the adults couldn't hear anything.
Hmmm, interesting. And scary. My parents told me when I was a young child that I had many imaginary friends. I can't even fathom myself now as a four year old talking to something that isn't really there, but I did. If younger people can hear things that older ones can't, could this mean that I was having a conversation with something in truth, but older people couldn't perceive of it?
there's an mp3 of it here http://www.moconews.net/the-mosquito-ringtone.html my pc audio is only hooked up to headphones. i wasn't sure if i heard it but my thirty-something ears felt the discomfort of being hit with high frequency noise.
it gave me a headache actually. weird. feels like the sound u hear when a tv is on in the other room.
Being of the age to actually hear the sound, it pretty much is like that. Kind of like a loud version of it. Haha, then again maybe that's what it's supposed to sound like to older people... I'm only 20! But yeah, vibrate works better.
I can hear it. Maybe that's because I'm 17. But yeah, I also don't see the point when you can use vibrate.
Since I'm not in school anymore who cares. Vibrate seems to work well for me at work anyway. Maybe I should come out with a phone that just sends an electrical current through you. I'll name it "The Chair" and kids will love that electricution feel.
to be serious, i dont see the need for anyone under the age of maybe 17 to have a cell phone...and yet a PLENTY do.
It's like the Dane Cook "sound that makes you punch babies." What do they do when they get the call anyway? Answer it?
