I'm looking to take some salsa dance lessons with my woman. Anyone have any recommendations in Houston? Good/bad experiences? There are tons of studios in the phone book, and I don't want to be left picking one at random--just wondering what you guys know. I'm in Bear Creek, so anything on the NW side would be preferable. Or the Memorial area.
pasox2 is the man to ask on this. But I'd say go and find some group lessons. They are usually about $40 for 4 weeks. Great way to learn and meet new people. There are group classes down at UH Main campus on Sundays. But if you prefer private lessons, be prepared to spend some major ca$h. I started taking lessons about 5 months ago, it's one of the best things I've ever started. Good luck.
http://www.llu.com/2000.htm You can also pick up a magazine in a restaurant or local store. They usually have salsa dance lessons in them.
I'll chime in later, busy right now. Salsa is fun. Go out to Tropicana or Elvia's for a starter and see what you like. Like Coma said, group lessons are cheap and a good way to start and meet people. You'll get used to the format. Private lessons are $ 60.00 - $ 125.00/ hr. Actually, there are some really good teachers who will do a student discount for a while at $ 40.00. Having a partner is very handy for practice. Just watch out for fighting. "You're off time!" "You always lead that wrong!" bleh. Remember to keep it light and have fun. Laugh and enjoy touching. locations etc. later. best wishes, p
I'm wondering about this as well. I couldn't decide what to get RM95's Girl for Xmas until the day before. I didn't want to get her jewelry because I'm planning on getting her a fairly expensive ring later this year, so I settled on this. Thanks for any advice pasox.
here's some things I found searching google salsa + houston free lessons at nightclubs : http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SalsaHouston/message/219 houston area instructors : http://cityguides.salsaweb.com/texas/houston/instructors.htm If you're on the west side, you might check westside dance studio 9743 Katy Freeway. There's a number of teachers out there, you'll see on the list. I prefer the dance place or King Dance Center, but those are more for ballroom. Actually, there's a good number of salsa teachers at the dance place, too. I like Rey Rodriquez a lot. He's been teaching the group classes at UH for the social and ballroom dance club that meets on Sundays (starting again in Feb.) He would usually teach right before me ( I'd teach ballroom latin - cha cha, rumba, etc.). He'd always have a good attitude and gets the crowd moving. He's a really positive person, and that's helpful in getting people to get past hangups and inhibitions and try to get moving when the co-ordination hasn't been learned yet. There's a number of good names on the list. I can give you my impressions on style and rep (if i know them) if you write. I found this in my search, too - it looks interesting. I don't know anything more but that it's at the new UH building, which is very nice : http://www.houstonsalsa.homestead.com/ seems worth checking out. Finding a teacher and approach to meet your goals is a personal thing. Whatever works for you, it's fun to get out and dance. Glad to see the interest, and hope you have fun. I'll check back again later, if I can find more. I'd be interested to see what's your interests. I really like international style latin and ballroom, myself. Well, there's a start.
rudager - just get Pasox to teach you, he is just like Paul Mercurio in Strictly Ballroom... he is amazing in a pair of tight pants and a ruffled shirt..... pair him up with HeySchweetie and they burn the floor up
wow, that sounds like so much fun... wish I could learn, but my husband wouldn't do it. I'd be plenty happy to dance with other people... but I'm always afraid that too many females, proportionally speaking, will show up to these things. And then what do they do? I don't want to end up being assigned to play the guy's role (and, because I'm tall, I'm afraid I would be an easy target). Not my cup of tea.
From what I read from your posts, Isabel, I'm sure you'd be absolutely fabulous. You've got a great spirit, quick wit, clever tounge, reasonable physical self-confidence, and a natural, sparkling, attractive femininity. It's very pleasing in print. I'm sure your husband would be very lucky to get you out for an evening. I'm sure you're easy to show off. Being much too short at 5'9", I think I can type all this. . With no direct personal interest, I can readily imagine you would do very well, and have a lot of fun. Don't be afraid to ask him. It's really more a gift. Lucky man.
Everything pasox has to say about dancing is spot on. It is amazing. I started a couple of months ago, and I'm loving it. On a side note, I just got laid tonight.
awww, how sweet! That makes me feel good. Of course, who knows, maybe it all comes across better in print than in person... It is interesting being a tall female; I never felt that I got all that much interest from guys. The ones who were the most interested in me were 6'4" and 6'5" - and my husband, at 6'0" (but small skinny build). Maybe, at that point, our height ratios are more like most couples and it's just easier to imagine. Of course, I'm not really picky at all with regard to height or weight anymore - I'm past that (though, of course, since I'm married my preferences no longer make any difference). Then you get the guys with the Amazon fetish - please. *sigh* Just because you have the height and build doesn't mean you have a dominatrix personality, or one that is different from any other female. It does make it easier to be "one of the guys" - in fact, I'm more comfortable in a room full of men than a room full of women, probably because then I'm a normal height.
