I was listening to a Dan Patrick interview with Dan Reeves (a podcast on espn.com) and he said he had nothing to do with the draft and if the decision was made up to him...he would have chosen Young, Bush and Leinart. Williams was never even an option for him...nor did he even look at film of Williams. Williams never came up. He said Carr has a lot of talent...but has been hit and sacked so much. He said it was all up the new coach. Interesting!!!!
I'd heard that story before but I wasnt sure how true it was. I guess its all water under the bridge now, but an interesting story.
I don't have a link, but I heard Reeves talk about how he would select VY #1 very close to the draft. I believe it was before. There was also a former Dallas (gm? scout? I forget which, but worked in the Landry era) who said he would have picked VY as well. Both on the Dan Patrick show iirc. But they are both just talking heads now so doesn't really mean all that much.
If he would have picked VY, RB, or ML then fine, that's his opinion. But, regarless of what you think of his performance this season, Mario was a legitimate candidate for the #1 pick and if you won't even look at tape of the guy then you're an idiot and shouldn't be making draft decisions. In a draft where over 200 players are taken, you need to evaluate everyone you can. You can't pick and choose who should be evaluated. You look at everybody and then make your picks knowing you've seen the whole picture. "I'm going to take Ryan Leaf #1 because he did well in college and I never even looked at tapes of Peyton Manning."
I don't know if this is accurate, but I thought New Orleans indicated they would take Mario with the second pick if we took Bush. But Dan Reeves is a genius to narrow it down to those 3 guys. Maybe his whole draft research consisted of watching the Rose Bowl.
I think he was the head scout during the first heydays of the Cowboys under Tex Schramm and Tom Landry from the mid 60s to the mid-70s. He selected guys like Rayfield Wright and Mel Renfro and Dan Reeves...
