Thompson, the team's career leader in scoring and rebounding, said Friday the baby is due in mid to late May. The WNBA season begins May 21. The father of the baby boy is Miami Heat guard Damon Jones, who played at the University of Houston and is Thompson's longtime boyfriend. "I was very shocked," Thompson told KRIV television in Houston. "It wasn't a planned thing, although it's a very welcome one and very exciting one for me and Damon." Thompson set no definitive date for her return but said she does plan to rejoin the team this season. The top pick in the 1997 WNBA draft, Thompson was instrumental in the Comets' four WNBA championship runs and was a member of last summer's Olympic basketball team that won the gold medal.
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/3025440 Pregnancy to sideline Thompson Comets forward expects to return after May birth By W.H. STICKNEY JR. Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle Comets All-Star forward Tina Thompson on Friday announced she will miss part of the 2005 WNBA season because of pregnancy. "At this moment, I won't be starting the beginning of the season with the Comets," Thompson said. "I'm planning to have a child, and I do have expectations of returning back to the team as soon as I possibly can. "I know that I will definitely be out, or not interacting with the team in a physical way, until (after) the end of May, because that's the expected time (of birth)." Thompson, 29, her partner, former University of Houston guard Damon Jones who plays for the Miami Heat, have learned from doctors the baby is a boy. Thompson, who was on last year's U.S. Olympic gold medal team, has placed no target date for her return to the Comets, saying it will happen only "when I'm physically ready. I don't want to come back and be a hindrance to the team." Coach Van Chancellor is "pleased for Thompson, and we're going to welcome her back when she's able to come back." When the WNBA was formed in 1997, Thompson, a product of Southern Cal, was the first college player drafted. In eight seasons, all with the Comets, Thompson has averaged nearly 16 points per game. The Comets open training camp in early May. The first game is May 21 at San Antonio.
thats what sucks about womens sports. imagine if next year we signed marco jaric, and trade mo for DA, and drafted a center: yao-deke-pick Jho-pad-spoon tmac-DA-bowen wesley-barry-gaines jaric-sura-ward we would have a team that should get home court in the playoffs. then right before the season starts, tmac gets knocked up and will have to miss the season....
I figure the WNBA would prefer more . . .cause they seem to be trying to feminize the game trying to buck the lesbian stereotype Rocket River BTW that is a horrible picture of her . .. she is a cute lady
Damon Jones is a luck man. At the top of the league in 3 point completion in Miami, and married to a fine woman I think... I wish I was him!!!!
