TNT signs Doug Collins to five-year deal

    August 14, 2003
ATLANTA (AP) -- Former Washington Wizards coach Doug Collins signed a a five-year contract Thursday with TNT to be an analyst for the network's NBA broadcasts.

Collins, also a former coach of the Chicago Bulls, was replaced as coach of the Wizards in June. He will work one of the network's Thursday night doubleheader games, TNT spokesman Greg Hughes said. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The move follows TNT's signing last week of former player Steve Kerr to a deal to be an analyst for NBA games. Kerr finished his 14-year career in June by winning a championship with the San Antonio Spurs -- his fifth title.

Collins and Kerr join a long list of former players and coaches who have worked as analysts for TNT in recent years, including Charles Barkley, John Thompson and Mike Fratello.

oooh, I can't stand that guy. His voice just grates like chalk on a blackboard, and he's blah blah blah blah blah. Non-stop, non-stop, no pause for breath and he screams. He's always off-key and loud loud loud. You screwed up, TNT. Bury that guy somewhere on the east coast, please.

Look on the bright side, it is better that TNT is rehiring Doug Collins for TV analyst than Jeff Van Gundy.

    :D

Are you crazy. Doug Collins is one of the best in the business. He offers great insight as both a former player (and a good one, not scrublike crap) and coach.

Collins is easily the best analyst in basketball. Most analysts are complete loudmouth morons that don't even know how to speak.

Collins may be a jerk as a coach, but he's great as an announcer.

I agree, he's an awesome broadcaster but his voice is just grating. He sounds like he would start whining and crying if he hit him.

Dominique Wilkins would make the best TV announcer of all time. That guy can talk up a storm about absolutely nothing and still make you laugh.

ahmad has his lips around jordans nuts.

Bob Costas is the best at what he does, no matter what sport. He carries the Olympics by himself.

Doug Collins is the best analyst in basketball. It is a good pickup by TNT.

Is he going to be working with Marv?

I have to agree about the greatness of Collins.

After awhile of listening to him, people will start to think he can coach again, and he'll eventually get hired by some team.

Bob Costas sucks arse at basketball annoucing, he's corny and he's too slow, he thinks he's still calling a baseball game. Totally different.

Chick Hearn was the best play by play man I ever heard

Yep. Whiny voice, sometimes hoarse and whiny, which is even worse. His favorite descriptive phrase is "SOOOOOOO (fill in the blank)", which he uses about a hundred times a game. The 76ers have SOOOOOO much heart! Shaq is SOOOOO strong! The Spurs are playing SOOOOO well on the defensive end!

No doubt about it. Chick had a machine gun delivery and a great voice and knowledge of the game. He pretty much invented more than half of the common b-ball terminology that every announcer uses today.

I'm glad he's back. I have one of the Rockets vs Suns games (in 1994) in which Collins was the commentator.

    He did a good job.

"How about five?!?!?!" -- taking about Vernon Maxwell's 3 point shooting zone in which he hit five 3pointers in a row!

MFing dammit. i hate doug collins. am i the only one who thinks he's all over the lakers nuts or something? i loved when iverson missed a shot by about 3 feet one time and as they go to commercial, the replay clearly shows kobe hit him about midway on the forearm (not even the damn wrist) and all collins says is nice d by kobe. and he does absolutely nothing for me in the humor department. maybe i value laughs more than most people (i like to laugh during just about everything i watch, one reason i love bill and calvin), but man this sucks.

i was loving the marv, czar, jvg group last year. it's good jvg is the coach instead of someone else, but dammit now collins will mess it all up. hopefully walton and tolbert do games together. i know most can't stand tolbert, but he makes me laugh too.

as long as the studio show is still good with EJ, kenny, and chuck i guess i'll get by.

doug collins is all right...anybody's better than tom tolbert anyway.

the czar is my favorite commentator. he doesnt get the recognition he deserves. and marv is actually not bad except for the whole biting women's asses thing.

I agree. I like his passion also. Hopefully this is a good omen meaning the Rockets are headed back to the playoffs, because the Rockets always made the playoffs when Collins was at TNT.

When he called Rockets playoff games in 94 and 95, he constanly propped up Hakeem. After one of Hakeems baskets against the Spurs I think, Collins said, "That move should be illegal."

By that logic, Isaiah Thomas is one of the best in the business - whether we're talking about management, commentary or coaching (hint: he's not.)

Except Isiah doesn't offer great insight as anything. You'll note that was a key part of the statement.
