Mark Cuban wants piece of international pie

    Tim MacMahon

Mark Cuban believes that the movement of NBA veterans to Europe is actually a good thing for the NBA. Really.

Cuban's stance on the issue might change if, say, Dirk doubles his salary by returning to Europe once his contract expires. But Cuban did blog an interesting case to support his stance that the NBA benefits from the Euro competition for talent.

Cuban, whose stance against NBA players participating in the Olympics is well known, would like to see the Euro teams advance to the point where they could compete against the elite NBA teams in tournaments.

European Soccer has done a phenomenal job of inventing tournaments that drive huge revenues and TV dollars. This would allow the NBA to do the same thing. Take a Christmas break, or do it in the summer , where the top 6 records in the league play the top 6 teams over there , with the revenues from the event being split primarily among the participant teams rather than equally among all NBA teams. Not only would that be a great revenue source for all the teams involved, but it would create a huge economic incentive for the other 24NBA teams and all overseas team to become top tier teams.

Then of course we could create our own World Cup type tournament every 4 years.
You might consider Cuban a hypocrite for wanting these types of tournaments while shooting down the Olympics. However, Cuban's anti-Olympics stance is based on his belief that the basketball part of the Games are about money, not patriotism. And he wants Mavs coaches to be able to work with the team's players over the summer.

So some extra wear and tear on the players' bodies is OK as long as it's under the watch of the coaches Cuban pays -- and it makes his bank account bigger.

I have been saying that for years, 56 regular season games, 20 or so playoff games. Top 4 teams get to play the super league with top 4 euro teams. Sucky teams need to be punished.

It's still a few years away (probably a couple of decades or so), but I think that would eventually be a great idea. I'm with Cuban on this one, I think everyone would stand to profit from it, but it's a long-term project since the top Euro teams are nowhere near the top teams in the NBA. International ball is a little different, but even then there are only a couple of teams or so that have consistently given Team USA a hard time (not enough, IMO).

It can be 2-3 years, if LeBron, Kobe, and Boozer join Childress on that Greek team. Some folks believe a $50 mil/yr offer is coming to Lebron.

Its a good idea to me when European ball advances naturally to compete with the NBA. Instead of at the expense of the NBA by worsening our league to make their's better. Might as well take all the 50 best players and disperse them among the 50 best clubs in all the leagues to create some competitive parity, if the money is gonna be that big.

The more participating teams in inter leauge tournaments, I think the more top heavy itll be with the same teams being repeat successes.

Its probably a couple decades away from naturally occuring, but since the whole euro involvement is talked about so much and on everyone's conscious, they might act on a few years sooner rather than later.

It's naive to believe that the top European teams can compete with the top NBA teams in the near future. Keep dreaming, Mark Cuban.
