Hey, I am going to be getting a job in Dallas -- it's about 95% certain. I have some questions about things there: I'm going to be looking for an apartment. My job will be around 635 and 289. Any suggestions? I'll post more later, I just wanted to get this up for advice -- I'll ask more questions soon.
I would rather stay here, but if you've been reading the BBS for a while, you've noticed my status as resident unemployed bum, and both of these positions are awesome.
Vengeance, Hey man, sorry to hear that your moving to little d. Think of it as Beverly Hills (price wise) but not near as nice. Really if you want some good info go back to some of the other previous forums where Houston vs dallas was discussed in great detail. I'm sorry I can't help in locating them (not real computer savvy) but maybe some of the other BBSers can. Anyway, bettler luck next time. Oh, by the way 635 traffic is murder. Have you given any thought to where you might live? You know with all of us Rocket fans living in & around the metroplex we should all try to hook up one night (or several) & catch some games together on TV if any one is interested. The first game would be great. Let me know something all of you dallas Rocket fans. Getting back to your original plight, if there are any questions I can help you with I will try to answer them as objectively as I can.
Well, things have taken a turn for the interesting I've now been offered a position here in Houston, doing full time what I've been doing part-time for a week . . . I'll have to make my decision tomorrow night.
Vengeance, Isn't 289 another name for Preston Road? If so, then you, my friend, will be in the HEART of some of the worst traffic in Dallas and in the heart of some expensive apartments. Go to one of the following sites : www.rent.net www.apartments.com www.springstreet.com www.aptguides.com and look for housing housing in the Plano, Richardson, Allen, Dallas, Garland, or Mesquite area. But first get a map or ask somebody if 289 is aka Preston Road.
I live on Preston Rd in Plano, and my rent is only $650 per month on a nice place. I paid that much for a smaller, not-as-nice place in Arlington before this. I don't have any problems with the traffic, but I don't have to drag myself to a job, so I don't get stuck in the rush hour stuff.
One bedroom in both cases. Certainly I've seen more expensive places in the Greater DFW area. Of course, apartments are screwy anyway. Invariably, my rent will rise at about a 20% per year clip. When I moved into my Arlington apartment in November of 1997, the rent was $415. When I moved out, the rent was $675. Even the apartment I keep in Amarillo is about the same. When I rented the place in January of 2000, the rent was $355 (the place is somewhat of a hole. The nicer places in town rent for about what apartments rent for here in Plano), this month, the rent was $485.
Vengeance, I lived in that exact area for some time a few years back. Email me and we can talk about it if you wish. You will find mostly expensive places there, as DoD said, but there are some less expensive (while still relatively nice) apartment complexes around there. I have been in Dallas for 11 years. I can steer you around to places to go out, eat, play ball, etc.
Where is a good place to play ball? I usually play at the SMU courts but it's a pain to pay two bucks a pop for guests who want to come with me. Just wondering if you know of any indoor places that are open to the public in Dallas or Garland. Thanks!
It's hard to find a good indoor gym that doesn't charge either for a membership or a guest fee. Unless you drive to Carrollton. There are two rec. centers that have open play for free. I play at a church gym with pretty good competition most nights in Carrollton also. Plano has a few, but the require a membership of 30 dollars for a year. Cheap in the relative scheme of things, especially if you play often. I'll drive anywhere within reason to play ball........ If you want specifics on these joints, email me.
my cousin lives near Dallas, in Frisco Texas. I think it's pretty close to Richardson also. There's a community college not too far from his house, and it is free. Sorry, i dont know the name of the college, maybe some of you can help?
The only problem with Frisco is it's way the hell up there... the only "quick" way to the main city area (Plano, Richardson, Dallas, etc.) is by taking the tollway straight down... but then you're paying tolls, too. Of course I'll let Vengeance make that choice...
I know of a community college near Richardson, but have not checked out the gym, and don't know exactly where it is in regard to Frisco. The community college I know of is called Collin County Community College...or Quad C for short. Like I say, I haven't checked out the gym, but for a community college, it is very nice.
I have membership at the Crosby Rec Center in C-town. Haven't tried Quad C yet, but I might try that one of these days. Actually, now that school has opened up again, I'm sure I'll be running more at SMU than in the summer. There's always a game going on. Finding courts to play on is usually only a problem in the summer, when no one is on-campus. Thanks for the suggestions though...
