Gee, I guess aimlessly pouring money into building larger and larger roads will only stopgap the real problem for a short time.

The key is to build a solid alternative infrastructure for transport that is advantageous enough for people to forgo their cars. Also, it is time for Texas to become a bit denser. I know there is a lot of land but continuing to spread out like this will continue to create problems such as this one.

traffic is not a problem, it's a side effect of success. people have the money for cars and gasoline and jobs to drive to.

I can't figure out where it will be 24 lanes across. I work 5min from there and I could see where it would be 14 lanes (6 on each side plus 2 feeders) by the airport - thats the widest spot.

I'll be glad to see this finished though - its directly between Dallas and Fort Worth and it connects to the NE part of Tarrant Countly which is one of the top 5 fastest growing areas in the country.

does this mean the new drivers from south of the border will still go to the extreme left lane and go 40mph?

or will they stop lane 4?

Makes sense. More lanes encourages more people to drive, meaning more congestion.

If you built a 24 lane freeway in Wyoming or Idaho, you'd still have no traffic or congestion. It's actually the expanding business and retail offerings at the destination point that encourage more car owning people to not be at home, and therefore spend and consume more and expand the economy. That will always a bigger and longer term priority than routine traffic jams.

I was just driving some of them new roads the other day here in North Texas. The new lanes are great and taking 121 north of the airport going southbound is no longer the pain it once was with a few bottlenecks. But, what's funny is they still expect people to drive 50 mph like it is under construction. There is barely any noticeable construction going on and people are driving at least 65-70 mph pretty much all the time. If you even try to drive 50 mph, you stick out like a sore thumb and end up causing a traffic jam in the lane. But, one thing I've noticed is all the 50 mph signs, regardless of what the state of the construction is, are consistently ignored. The cops pretty much seem to have given up trying to police those roads as far as I can tell.

idk, katy freeway is supposed to be like 26 lanes and last time i counted it looked like 18 lanes or so, theres a way they count the HOV lanes and feeders to make it sound much larger.. idk maybe im completely wrong, but i was expecting to count 26 lanes and didnt see that..

1.1B is chump change for a highway. To put in perspective how expensive highways cost to build, TXDoT is about to widen (rebuild) i45 South on only a 2.5 mile stretch of road next to Baybrook Mall, and it's going to cost $105M.

The cops are probably looking for North Texas, which is way up in the Panhandle.

They need to fix the roads they have now in the Dallas area. They are even more crappy then what we have in Houston.

Actually, this was one of the worst spots for congestion in the area - its not quite finished yet but it has already had a huge impact on the traffic.

I moved to the Plano/Lewisville area 2 months ago and I can tell you traffic is caused by one thing --slowass drivers. If they even drove at the speed limit or even a few more mphs above the speed limit on the freeway it would be great. But nope, slowass drivers slow down the tollways (which are ridiculous in and of itself), 635, 121, etc. When there's a traffic accident in Houston they try to close down the least amount of lanes necessary. When there's a traffic accident in DFW they try to close down all but one lane no matter what.
