[rquoter]Dirk Nowitzki is headed to free agency.

That's not a huge surprise, although the Mavericks were hoping talks about a contract extension for the nine-time all-star would come to fruition.

A source confirmed that an extension now is unlikely and that if the face of the franchise is to stay in Dallas, it will happen via a new contract in free agency.

Nowitzki said last month that he would exercise his early termination option and explore free agency. It's the first time he'll be free on the open market.

The team was able to continue negotiating until Nowitzki officially informed them that he would opt out, which must be done by Wednesday.

Assuming Nowitzki and adviser Holger Geschwindner take care of that detail, the Mavericks can begin negotiating a new contract, likely for four seasons.

...He probably will get a visit or a call from owner Mark Cuban and/or president Donnie Nelson at 11:01 p.m. Wednesday, when free-agent wooing can begin. Contracts can be signed starting July 8.

When Nowitzki opts out, he will be leaving $21.5 million on the table. A new deal could start at a lower number, but would provide more security by stretching over four years.[/rquoter]

I'm too lazy to look up the numbers and the CBA, but I'm pretty sure Dirk's salary is already past the normal max. Which means other teams either aren't going to be able to pony up nearly the amount that Dallas can, or they pretty much take up all their capspace(originally for 2 maxes) for him.

Regardless, this move is only so he can resign in Dallas for a long term deal. No other location makes sense unless Cuban actually want Dirk to leave.

I could see Dirk reuniting with Nash on the Suns. That would be interesting.

    Brooks/Lowry
    Martin/Bud/Taylor
    Ariza/Battier
    Dirk/Scola/Hill/PP/Hayes/jeffries (all can play 4 or 5)
    Yao

Pretty sick lineup. Scola comes in as 6th man for Yao. Maybe manage a trade for a legit blocking center (haywood) or a veteran guard for jeffries and battier.

With that line up you can also trade some of the 4's and Battier in a sign and trade deal to get Bosh.
    Brooks/Lowry
    Martin/Taylor
    Ariza/Bud
    Dirk/Bosh/PP
Yao/Dirk (Can switch to the 5 at times)

Yeah because Bosh wants to come off the bench.

If he wants a butt load of money, he can go to NYC.

Bosh and Dirk are starters, good luck convincing either of them to come off the bench...

heres cubans plan as was told to me by someone who claims to be in the know

dirk opts out. cuban sells off contracts for picks, cuban signs joe johnson, dirk then signs with dallas for less...doesnt make sense i know

another thing i got was dirk opts out, then resigns for a much cheaper deal after they sell off expirings for joe johnson, who knows.

all i know is dirk sucks because half his points come from freethrows, and not from being good,he does what pau does, flails his long arms like a manic and has long hair shaking violently and screams even with no contact and refs call a foul EVERY single time. thats the secret behind pau and dirk. if you ever wondered why pau has ugly hair thats why, shaking hair makes it look like a foul, this tactic has ruined the nba for me

scola tries it but refs dont like houston so it wont work

bosh is like 5 years younger atleast. id go with bosh, especially since he is from dallas. bosh is a better defender to. both are soft, but dirk is softer

Dirk sucks? He may flop to get to the free throw line but he is far from a player that sucks. No other big man in the league can shoot like him and is nightmare matchup for most teams.

Having Dirk would just be awesome... I hate the Mavs but this big guy can ball.
