I think we should inquire, but I'd be very sensitive to the financial commitment. He'd be helpful in the short run, but is not a long-term investment at his age.

maybe we could sign him and Allen Houston

..then hopfully we would have at least one off the IR for all 82 games ;)

if he gets cut we should definitely make an offer. we would be the next best option for him. he could stay close to home, he would make us a contender, he would have a much bigger role with us then in dallas.

what will he sign for? dallas is still paying his whole salary, but i have a feeling that teams would still offer the MLE to him.

Only if they're going to sign him for the minimum. The Rockets need alot more important pieces than a declining Finley to get to the top. Finley of 3 or 4 years ago, you'd negotiate price with. Today's Finley is more of bonus addition than a vital cog, especially since Dallas would still be paying him max money. If he really wanted to come here, he'd have to understand he can't screw up the Rockets' financial building block plan by taking part or all of the MLE. That money needs to be spent on vital longer term players, not Finley types who are already drawing max money.

The best part about Finley is even when he's on the bench he can have a tremendous impact on the game.

If Finley wants to show Dallas that they made a mistake by cutting him, join Houston would make sense.

Laughing out loud, Clutch. Just hilarious, and great job on the artwork. I give it two thumbs up.

There has been some talk that what teams might do is cut players and re-sign them to the veteran minimum. They'd still have to PAY the player, but they'd get the larger dollar figure off of the cap.

    Uh, cough...Juwon Howard...cough.

Apparently that isn't possible. According to the article: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/062405dnspomavslede.3c144a68.html

I also thought the cap figure wasn't affected, just the luxury tax.

Yes it's just the luxury tax, the exception has no bearing on the salary cap.

Jeff, as mentioned, that loophole isnt possible. If a team cuts a player for the LuxTax benefit then they CANT resign them.

What that means to other teams is these HIGH PRICED players will be out there on the FA market and probably will sign FA deals CHEAP with "winning" teams because they will already be getting their huge payday from the teams that have cut them.

The Free Agent pool could get a little deeper because of this. More options available.

I would most definitely sign him for the vet minimum, but not much more than that. If our intention was to use our pieces to sign a difference-maker SG, Mobley is still out there and is the better player.

man, the overpaid players of the world must be loving this. not only are they extremely overpaid, but now they can get cut and then sign for even more money. how F'ing ridiculous is that.

i like the rule to let teams out from huge mistakes one time, but that aspect of it still pisses me off. finley should have to give all of whatever new contract he signs to charity.

Concur. I see this making the disparity between the "top tier" teams and the scrubs much wider...

I would sign him for anything less than the MLE.
