Dallas Cowboys' Romo gives break to homeless man

01:28 AM CST on Thursday, November 20, 2008

    By TIM MacMAHON dallasnews.com / tmacmahon@dallasnews.com

IRVING – A homeless man who goes by Doc was cashing in change at a Cinemark Theatre in Dallas when a guy walked up and offered to pay his way into the movie. He planned to spend his day passing out fliers and accepted a rain check before realizing that he recognized the generous gentleman.
    Dallas Cowboys / NFL

"Was that Tony Romo?" Doc asked the worker behind the counter.

It sure was. Doc, who requested that his real name not be used, hustled across the street to the consignment store that paid him to occasionally pass out fliers and requested the day off. By the time he got back to the theater, Role Model had already started.

Romo, who confirmed the story but didn't want to elaborate, waved Doc over to sit by him and his friend. Doc sheepishly mentioned that he hadn't showered in a few days.

"Don't worry about that," Romo said. "I'm used to locker rooms."

And so the $67 million quarterback and a man who doesn't have $6.70 to his name sat next to each other and shared laughs for 90 minutes or so.

For Romo – who made news by changing a couple's tire on a roadside on the way home the night of the season opener – it was just another kind gesture to a random stranger. It meant the world to Doc.

"For me, it was a blessing," Doc said. "It came at just the right time. It gave me some encouragement and faith in mankind. I just wanted to say thank you."

As much as I hate the Cowboys, Romo is seems like a pretty good guy. First he helps change a flat tire and then helps out this homeless man. Can't really say anything bad about the man.....off the field. ;)

I want to hate romo, but I can't. Psssh... and some say that dating jessica simpson has gotten to him. Infact, Romo is the only thing Jessica has going for her. I read that her last movies, and they all have titles of a p*rn, only made two thousand dollars. How does someone so hot fall so hard? I don't know. =(

I want to hate Romo, and I do. Anyone can do that crap. Who cares that the millionaire quarterback of the cowgirls gave a bum some money or changed someone's tire or talked to someone in a lower caste. I've done all that crap too and I'm sure you have done something nice for someone down on their luck too. It's called compassion. It's a human emotion. Apparently sports stars are not suppossed to show it, because when they do it gets broadcasted all over media. Where's my article for giving some hobo a cig and 5 bucks so he could buy a couple tall boys?

Screw Tony Romo. Screw the Cowgirls. Screw the Mavericks. Screw the Rangers. Screw the Stars. Screw SMU. Screw TCU. Screw Ghost Bar. Screw anything in or close the Dallas/Fort Worthless Metrosexual Plex.

I doubt some people even understand what compassion is.

The bottom line, whether you want to accept it or not, is that it gave the down-trodden guy some hope. A little hope can go a long way. Romo did not make a big deal about it. The guy appreciated it.

Try not to think about the fact that he is a Dallas Cowboy. I mean come on.

Anyone can do that crap but do they? Do you? The guy has always been class and is still a class guy. The guy never does it for publicity unlike some pro athletes and he still remains one of if not the most humble athlete in the city. I think his parents, his upbringing and his struggle to become an NFL QB all helped in shaping his character. I still can't believe he left Carrie Underwood for Jessica Simpsons though. :D

Imagine if this guy was the Texans QB, how much people of Houston would be all over this story.

Still hate the cowboys and want them to lose every game, but it's kind of hard to hate on him.

Yeah, I'm beginning to believe that to. Don't get me wrong, it seems as if Romo is a nice guy (though, I still hate him since he plays for the Cowgirls), but how exactly did this get reported? Did the homeless guy contact the media (doubtful)? And even if he did, what media person would really listen to a homeless guy who called up and said "I went to the movies with Tony Romo"? Seems like a media plant to me. Maybe he did it, maybe he didn't, but the way it is reported seems a bit suspicious.

jajaja. Too much time on your hands, bro. Why would JJ make this up? Someone like PacMan would benefit from this, not Tony Romo.

In other news, Matt Schaub and Sage Rosenfels kicked a homeless guy on the way to the Galleria. True story.

Oh really? Not for publicity eh? Not sure when the last time I got on the news for giving money to some homeless guy.
If not for publicity how did you get around to reading about it?

I think my parents, my upbringing, and my struggle to become successful all helped in me hating Dallas Cowboys fans in houston. They are just as gay as people from Dallas in my eyes.

Gee, yeah in the city of Dallas, where absolutely NOBODY would recognize the quarterback of the highest-profile sports franchise in the country, NOBODY would see that happening, NOBODY would tell anybody else, and NOBODY would call some tv or radio or newspaper person they know to talk about it..

    Sheesh.

You think that the only way something gets into the paper is if the person the story is ABOUT put it there??

In other news, you know that little dial-and-box in your car that makes music? There are not really tiny little musicians living in there.. LOL

Yeah, I get it, he's Tony Romo. But if this wasn't for publicity, how the heck did it make the news? Just like BetterThanI mentioned, how does something like this get reported? Are they doing 'homeless man on the street' flash reports now?

In other news, that mug you see looking back at you in the mirror...yeah, that's really you. Sorry.

My point is, some random homeless guy calls up and makes this report and a staff reporter on the Dallas Morning News actually takes it as gospel and writes up a story on it? Come on.
