Maybe this has already been discussed in another thread. With Yao out until March, the Rockets are even thinner in the big man dept. What do you all think for the Rockets going after Dale Davis? According to news reports Davis wants out of Detroit since CWeb is taking most of his minutes. He's in the last year of a $3.5 million contract. Could they use that trade exception to get him instead of trading a player? I don't know if the roster is maxed out but it still includes Bob Sura who won't be playing again. Dale Davis is 37, not young, but a fine back up center who can provide a big body and great rebounding/block/post presence. Once Yao came back the Rockets would be deep at Center position, but maybe he could play some PF minutes with the right match ups (Spurs?). And he'd be great insurance if Deke went down. I'd feel a lot better about the Rockets depth and ability to matchup against bigger teams if Steve Novack wasn't the only active Rocket besides Motumbo who's taller than 6'9". Deke is playing great, but what would the Rockets do if he went down before Yao came back? That thought alone makes it worth going after Dale Davis.
I'd rather get a backup pg like damon stoudemire with the TE or a big man like Lorenzen Wright or Steven Hunter
Getting a PG or a backup big is fine by me, especially since we have 2 assets which are going to be completely useless in the offseason. Sura and our Trade exception both expire in value.....might as well get something for them. DD
Dan Gadzuric anyone? The guy can flat our rebound and defend and can hit the mid range. Not sure how to get him though, he's on a 4 year 26 mil contract. might be a bit to expensive
My gut feeling is that we will not use the TE. Whatever we do we have to be realistic about our depth- and hope that we add talent that JVG will deploy. no point in getting players who do not contribute. I am against trading Bonzi- this guy is worth a lot to the team and he definitely has the skills IF JVG is refusing to use V Span- I dont see how that changes in the near future- so I am all for trading V span as it is more than likely we will go deep into the playoff's. There is a strong possibility that one of our stars will have bad games in play offs- I would add more scoring off the bench. Rebounding is great but that is not our big problem- we already are up there. Scott padgett is just occupying a slot without any hope of contributing. Sura will be gone- so we should be looking at 2 players. Whatever happened to Kirk?
Getting somebody younger is obviously better but easier said then done. In reality, Steven Hunter for the TE isn't possible. We need some help THIS season. If that means Dale David, then I'm fine with it. CD and Morey have both said we need big man help more than a PG. For guards, we have MANY options (albeit not great options). But if we lose any more big men, we literally have nothing on our bench. Padgett or Novak playing center? {shudder}
i'm very surprised at posters in this thread calling dale davis trash and saying he's too old to help us. dale davis is too old to help? i guess you would trade away deke if you had a chance... dale davis is 6-11, 250, and averages 3 rebounds and a block in only 11 minutes of play. he would be a great addition and would let deke rest a bit. he would also put chuck back at PF where he can defend and rebound instead of foul.
Davis is reportedly unhappy about his backup minutes being drastically cut because of Chris Webber. So I'm not sure how happy he'd be here since he'd have almost nil minutes once Yao gets back.
i wouldn't bet on that. deke would probably be happy to take april off in order to recover from his expended minutes. we need him at full strength for the playoffs. davis would get minutes here for the rest of the season. in the playoffs, i would imagine that he would play in some matchups at PF. hayes and howard aren't the best one-on-one defenders. he would work wonders for this season. it's a good opportunity for both parties. he can move on in the summer as we will re-sign hayes and deke (probably).
Anybody but Lorenzen Wright! Just trust me -- he would bring nothing but frustration. He's so foul prone, has butter fingers, doesn't rebound or play defense and seems to lack motivation. He makes Cato look like Bill Russell.
