    Van clears up mess,
    'official' is not a ref

    Quote from article

Van Gundy's return to the Rockets could indirectly influence Phil Jackson's decision to return to the Lakers or remain retired. During the Van Gundy saga, rumors circulated that Jackson, who has a history of stepping into a ready-made situation, would try to land in Houston if Van Gundy were removed. Jackson is also being courted by the Knicks.

Sure, trade JVG to Isaih then sign PJ. Get a 1st and return of the 2nd. Sure.

Nice, tho, that the image of two superstars on the verge for Jax to ride home on is nice,

Jeff Van Gundy avoided further punishment from the NBA after the league announced yesterday that it had concluded its investigation of the Houston Rockets' coach and that it considered the matter to be closed.
However, in statements released by both camps there remains a disagreement over what really happened and how it was settled.

NBA deputy commissioner Russ Granik issued a statement late yesterday that read, "Over this past weekend, coach Van Gundy publicly apologized for his comments last week suggesting bias in the league's refereeing relating to Yao Ming. He has also confirmed directly to an NBA representative that, during the Houston-Dallas playoff series, he did not have any communication with a referee (working or nonworking) other than, of course, during an ongoing game.

"In fact, his only conversations with league employees during the series were with league personnel in the normal course. In light of these circumstances, we now consider the matter to be closed."

The league seemed to be suggesting that Van Gundy fabricated the entire story. On May 1, Van Gundy told reporters that before Game 3 an official had informed him that the referees would look more closely at Yao in response to complaints by Mavs owner Mark Cuban about Yao setting illegal screens.

Van Gundy was fined $100,000 for his remarks and commissioner David Stern hinted that Van Gundy could face a suspension or even a lifetime ban.

Two hours after Granik's statement was released, the Rockets issued a statement in which Van Gundy said:

"I stand by my original comments and was quoted accurately.

"As Russ Granik correctly said in his statement today, the contact I spoke of that day was with league personnel. When I referred to an NBA official, people inferred that I was talking about a working NBA referee, instead of an official with the league. I was purposely vague because I had given my word that I would keep his name out of it.

"I did not want the issue to continue so rather than clarifying my original comments, I chose to let the matter die since I was wrong to bring the official into it to start with. I have been honest during this process, loyal to those involved and have apologized for my comments. I look forward to putting this behind me."

Stern also said he considered the case finished.

I'm happy that JVG will be back. I'm doubly happy if that means we can avoid any chance of getting Phil Jackson to coach the team.

Maybe after a few more years and only if JVG goes south. JVG is steadily improving this team and has earned the team's respect.

    Leave him be

Maybe we could coax Scottie Pippen out of retirement and bring DFish on board as well.

/Wondering how many rings I would have coaching the teams PJax coached

I'm so proud of JVG.For me,the guy has gone from terrier to savant coach/cult hero.CD does the heavy lifting on the teams overhaul this year, and Jeff already has the team rolling. The loss of Howard probably kept us from getting past the Mavs.Either way,we are going to be adding some major pieces this offseason and should be ready to roll.
Big Chief Triangle's mercenary like rep is not so attractive, but Larry Brown has that too.I believe it is quite possible that Phil could step in and do a better job. But,maybe not.
I look at both and see two different ends of the spectrum.Phil being the corporate man...and JVG being, well,JVG.He has so much character and basketball knowledge.Which guy do we want in our foxhole though?JVG is more of a gamble.....I could easily see Les hiring Phil....easily.Just because it makes basketball sense, doesn't make it right. The Rockets and the NBA are a business though. This is a crucial time for us.We MUST have the right man in there now.Our window is OPEN.It's a tough call and hopefully Les will make the right choice.
OMT..It sure is nice to have every player and coach wanting to be here.

If Mr. "Tied for Most Rings ever in the History of the NBA" wanted the gig, Le$ would be stupid to let Mr. "Tied for Least Rings ever in the History of the NBA" stand in his way.

Maybe but sometimes it pays to stick with the guy who the players all like and play hard for versus venturing into the unknown.

Le$ has already proven that he doesn't care about that, and with a squad considerably younger than the one on the floor right now.

JVG took this half-baked team as far as he could. This past summer, this team was completely dismanteled to get TMac and was only half-reassembled. Then we even lost JHow to injury. After one more off-season, CD will have a chance to round out most of our weaknesses.

I can't give up on JVG yet.
