I hated it immediately, but somehow made my way through it. It's poorly written and the plot is far too simple. I realize a lot of people liked this book and I should respect their opinion, but I can't bring myself to do that.
I feel intelligent after reading this book, like I've found out a secret I wasn't supposed to know. Fascinating book.
If you're looking for an inteligent alternative, consider Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum. It is a much more intelectual and complex variation on the "ancient religious order secret knowledge" theme. The book makes you work, but you are that much more enriched for it. Keep in mind that Eco's other novel, The Name of The Rose requires either fluency in latin or a companion book to understand a large part of the story. Focault's Pendulum isn't quite so demanding, but it's definately for people that enjoy having to look up some historical reference on the net, as opposed to the kind of Divinci Code plot that is one step up from a Robert Anton Wilson Illuminati potboiler.
Then look at these : http://answers.org/issues/davincicode.html http://www.catholiceducation.org/articles/persecution/pch0058.html When I was in college a long time ago, I read some Gnostic gospels in Greek class. It seems there are always some conspiracy weirdos out there that want to believe there is some magic, secret knowledge that will give a "special" class power over others. This sort of thing crops up throughout history, but never prospers.
You just made my morning...and I'm pretty sure you are the first to invoke RAW here on the BBS. Cheers.
SlickVik, brilliant thread. Simply brilliant. BTW, the topic has been discussed many times. Here's two: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=90729&highlight=Vinci+Code http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=92881&highlight=Vinci+Code If you gonna bring up such an old book to "discuss," try talking about some angle about the book. "Discuss" just sucks.
I stopped reading that book after 250 pages or so. I got that far because his prose is so great. But, in addition to not having much interest in the secret society bs, the story seemed to pointlessly meander. As for Da Vinci Code, I won't read it.
I loved The Name of the Rose, and found it more accessible than Foucault's Pendulum, but then my wife is a medieval historian and reads medieval latin and greek so i had safty net. Sean connery was pretty good in the movie as well.
1. Too popular. When I have 8 million people telling me to do something, I won't do it. I also have to wonder about a book if so many people are able to like it. 2. The premise sounds kinda dumb. 3. The premise (as I know it) is also offensive to my wife, so it would not promote tranquility in the household. 4. I try to confine my reading to the acknowledged classics. 5. With a new baby, I don't do much reading anymore.
Besides your initial pointless contribution...is this the "good" thing you had to say? Seriously, if you are interested in what people have to say, then at least make a minimal effort to start the thread. An entire thread started with one word is just plain silly.
