Oh well.. time to resign dream! Robinson Reportedly Agrees to Contract With Spurs From Staff and Wire Reports SAN ANTONIO (July 12) -- David Robinson has agreed to a new contract to stay with the Spurs, the player's agent told the San Antonio Express-News on Thursday. SportsLine.com reports that Robinson's contract will be a two-year deal worth more than $25 million (Full Story). Robinson's agent, Jeff Austin, told the newspaper that both sides were happy with the deal. "David wanted to remain in San Antonio and they wanted to keep him,'' Austin said. Tom James, the Spurs' director of media services, said the team couldn't comment. No free-agent contracts can be signed before Wednesday. Austin didn't return a phone call left at his office by The Associated Press. Robinson, at his vacation home in Hawaii, had on Tuesday questioned whether the Spurs wanted him. By Wednesday, team officials and Robinson's representatives were having serious talks. Robinson had rebuffed the Spurs' suggestion he take a pay cut anywhere from 50 percent to 80 percent of the $14.7 million he made last season. Spurs chairman Peter Holt had said such a move was needed to keep the team competitive. Until the NBA releases the official salary cap, the Spurs have about $16 million available to re-sign Robinson and Derek Anderson, who wants a contract worth $7 million annually. Robinson has played all of his 12 NBA seasons with the Spurs, with career averages of 22.8 points and 11.1 rebounds a game. He is a 10-time All-Star and was the league's MVP in 1995. Last season, Robinson had career lows with 14.4 points and 8.6 rebounds a game. AP-NY-07-12-01 1621EDT Copyright 2001 The Associated Press. So now Hakeem's 10 won't seem so unreasonable...see ya Mo? ------------------ "Quote under construction"
If it comes down to Dream making 10 mil or resigning Mo, that will be the easiest decision in the world for the Rockets front office. So long Dream. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Profiles, rankings, mock drafts, and more! The Mo Taylor Fan Site
Is Anderson going to take the 4 millions left then? That seems a bit unfair...unless the cap goes up, then I guess it be closer to 7 or 8 million. Damn! I don't like this because it kinda sets precedence for Dream. If Robinson is getting 25 million over 2, then Fegan is gonna use that to say 10. I really hope it goes down enough to keep Mo and company. Lowballing is always risky.
Robinson has more game left than Hakeem, we better not give him more than 8 million. Hakeem can no longer dominate a game defensively like Robinson sometimes can. ------------------ Hakeem, Hasaw, Haconquered.
I just don't see Dream coming back especially now that D-Rob signed that deal(I don't see how SA will bring back Derek Anderson now either). At this point if we have to wait past this weekend on Dream, I'd say we tried and never got a response from Dream so we must move on to Taylor, Moochie, and Anderson with Bullard being in the mix as well. Then enter whom ever we will try to sign a Jackson, Muhammed(hope not)..... Dream is not giving the Rockets options so bye bye(to my favorite player ever in the NBA). Not the type of way you would like to see Dream leave but if he feels he can get that amount somewhere else then let him get 10 mil from someone else...... ------------------
On the other hand, Ewing will likely only make about $2 mil with Orlando next season. While Hakeem's ability is closer to the range of DRob's, his age is closer to Ewing's. DRob will still be 3 years younger than Hakeem is now when his new contract expires. If Hakeem and Fegan cannot fathom that, then I pity their ignorance as to "investing" money in players. ------------------
Now that Davis and Robinson have gotten what is due, it is Akeem's time. He has not rushed anybody and have let the whole FA thing develop without touring here and there. He is well within the time period and thought it best to just chill and give the Rocket space. It is the Rocket perogative to go after Chris if they choose and obviously they have not. Akeem has left them room to do what they want. Now it is clear that the both sides are on the same wavelength(the retention of our own free agents) then they will get it done. I believe Akeem is as much interested in Mo-T and Norris being on the team as the Rockets themselves. As far as Shandon is concerned, it has nothing to do with Akeem and quite frankly I do not mind if he goes. There just is not enough room for him on this squad. This time last year all those rushing, hasty people were ready to put the Dream in his rocking chair. He proved otherwise and you, at this point, cannot get a better center. If David gets $25m for two years, then give the dream 14/15 for two. If Shandon is lost as a result, big deal. ------------------
Everyone, The latest word out of San Antonio is that it is a 2 yr 18 million dollar contract for Robinson, not 25 million. Big difference. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Profiles, rankings, mock drafts, and more! The Mo Taylor Fan Site
Cat, I hope your right. If it is then we still have a chance if not then Dream may be gone... A very slim chance but its a chance...I guess. I find it interesting that Sir Charles took a huge pay cut to bring in Pippen and Dream wants 10 mil... Thats what I question whether or not Dream REALLY wants to be here next season..... ------------------
Cat, that is certainly good news. In comparative value of Hakeem and Robinson, there is an obvious adjustment for Robinson's age and durability. Hakeem, his agent and the Rockets all know that Hakeem's value is less than Robinson's after that adjustment. Those three parties (Hakeem, Fegan, Rockets) are not inexperienced in negotiations as many of the emotional posters are on this bbs. The average fan is much better off during this situation than many of the posters on this bbs, whom I fear are on the brink of a stroke if Hakeem doesn't sign within the next 30 minutes. The average fan is going about his life in a normal fashion, and at some point before the season starts will read where Hakeem has signed with the Rockets and go "great", or he will read where Hakeem won't be with the Rockets next season and will go "aw, that's too bad... oh, well, want to see a movie tonight dear?" The truth of the matter is that if Robinson signed for $9mil for two years, then Hakeem will wind up signing up for something less, so I hope your report is correct. ------------------
$25 mil sounded a bit much. I must admit that freaked me for a minute when I first saw it. Still, $9 mil, at the cost of DA? What the hell are they smoking? They just pissed away their rising star for one that's going to burn out in 3 years... I really hope that doesn't go to Fegan's - er, um, Dream's head. Neither Dream nor the Admiral are anywhere near that valuable, IMO. ------------------
Treeman, The Spurs have near 20 million dollars in cap room. There is actually still room for them to sign Derek Anderson and another free agent, or enough to give Webber something extremely close to the max. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. The Cat: Didn't know they had that much wiggle room. Makes me wonder what all the fuss was about... I thought they were serious about the Webber hunt. Guess not. ------------------
