I love that image. war photography from that era is quite chilling and full of mystique. To the men of the U.S armed forces, the canadians, the french resistence, and the spanish guerrilleros who linked up with the french resistence, Many thanks.
By modern measurements in the media, this huge accomplishment would be considered a failure. Thousands dead. Major mistakes made. Considering the size of the operation, how secret it was, is incredible.
The modern media has never witnessed the United States going to war with a nation that was stronger militarily. It took the combined forces of the Commonwealth, the United States and the USSR to destroy the Nazi war machine. That's pretty impressive.
Right, but the Soviets were the other side of the flank. D-Day was a battle, and it took the effort of the Commonwealth and the US to win that battle, but the war was won on the backs of the Big Three.
The Soviets were diverting the attention of the Nazis on the Eastern front at this point. D-Day obviously being the beginnings of the Western flank
Before this gets derailed into D&D: Thanks to all the men who fought for freedom against tyranny, oppression, and genocide.
"Cause just, objectives clear. Threats real. Political considerations set aside. Leadership honest, competent and willing to serve." Can you say this about any of the wars the "modern media" have had to cover?
Wow, you are seriously defending the use of the word flank. Western Flank. Oh man this is to much. Hey did anyone ever read that book All quiet on the Western FLANK
In some ways, they were. If it weren't for the Soviets, Hitler wouldn't have 3 huge armies tied up there. But unless I'm mistaken, Hitler already had sufficient manpower to defend a sea attack, but he had taken the bait and pushed all his troops over to Pas de Calais rather than Normandy. So I would say it was a combination of Allied deception of Hitler and the USSR bogging down parts of Hitler's army that allowed the D-day landing to be.....well...not successful, but at least they got there and established a foothold.
I think what matters is that you understood what I was talking about. The Commonwealth and US were battling the Nazis on the western shores of Europe, and the Soviets were battling the Nazis in the eastern forests of Europe. I used flank to show that two armies were attacking from opposite sides against one army. I mean this is no Battle of Marathon flank, just as Athens was a city-state and Europe is a continent. I did not realize flank had scaling limitations, nor do I find anything indicating a limitation. But I'll refrain from upsetting you anymore in this thread, Mr. H.
I honestly have no idea what this thread is about. USSR, Germans, France, Commonwealth, Flank? I see a black and white picture of some folks on some kind of boat or cruise ship or something. Don't think its a paddle boat or row boat either. I was born in the 80's. Might as well watch Land Before Time again on my VHS deck.
