You'd think they could be prosecuted for coercion, or false imprisonment.

Its hard for me to follow my self-imposed "Be respectful to all religions" stance when stupid religions like these are actually in practice.

Why are you calling it a religion exactly?

It depends on your criteria for what a religion is. Scientology meets some definitions but not others. So while it's generally accepted as a religion, it's not hard to see why some people wouldn't classify it as one.

It's not hard to see why some people wouldn't classify it as one (i.e. trying to distance mainstream religions from the Church of Scientology), doesn't mean that they're correct in doing so, though. You don't get to make up your definition of what a religion is, we kind of already have that down on paper. Any reasonable, unbiased interpretation of Scientology would lend itself to being classified as a religion according to modern cultural definition.

Cool, but government can be wrong (shocking, I know). When a state classifies religions, their criteria are typically not based around what the cultural or philosophical definition is, but instead around things like money. Big surprise, huh. This is why I can start the Church of Rocketology in my garage as long as I watch my P's and Q's when it comes to the record keeping.

Ummm, if the mom quit Scientology, why didn't she tell anyone that her daughter was on a ship for 12 years?

That's what I'm saying. It just seems like Scientology preys on the weak of mind, and that's why you hear about so many cases of people being held against their will. I'm sorry, but I have a hard time believing that if this lady TRULY wanted to escape, she would have figured out a way. But unfortunately, they've figured out a way to manipulate people who have loads of other issues, and can't really fight for themselves.
