Report: Cubs OF Patterson to miss rest of season

    July 7, 2003

CHICAGO (Ticker) - Chicago Cubs outfielder Corey Patterson reportedly will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

Patterson was forced to leave Sunday's 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals when he came down awkwardly on the bag at first in the eighth inning. The injury originally was diagnosed as a a sprained right knee.

ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago, however, reported Monday that an MRI revealed a torn ACL that will require surgery.

A Cubs spokesman would not confirm the report, but Patterson was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday.

Patterson is hitting .298 with 13 homers and 55 RBI this season. The 23-year-old is in his second full season in the majors after hitting .253 in 2002.

Patterson was among the players listed on the ballot to determine the final spot on the National League roster for next week's All-Star Game. Dusty Baker of the Cubs, the NL manager, replaced Patterson on the ballot with Kenny Lofton of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Cubs (44-43) are tied for second in the National League Central with the Houston Astros, two games behind the St. Louis Cardinals.
