    ...

In having to rebut charges that he’s a Muslim, Obama seems to be in good company. Abe Lincoln’s political opponents rumored that he was Roman Catholic, Franklin Roosevelt’s that he was secretly Jewish. There is still a sizable chunk of voters who would not vote for Mitt Romney for president because he’s Mormon – not a Christian religion, some theologians argue.

But in the end, as most polls show, Obama’s success as president will hinge on things other than his religious faith, no matter how publicly he expresses it.

For as Democratic consultant Paul Begala told Politico: “I don't think Americans would care if he were a Druid, so long as we were creating jobs. It is still the economy, stupid.”[/rquoter]

    Do you agree with Begala?

Obama should suck it up and go to church publicly. It has to be a white church. Ronnie Reagan's handlers had to remind him to do so and he did.

Maybe at the end of his speeches Obama should say May Jesus bless American instead of May God Bless America. ;)

I think he's agnostic. Neither Christian or Muslim. Its "scholarly" to appeal to Muslims, its "favorable" to appeal to Christians, but he himself doesnt have any deep interest in either. Thats why he seems at ease with the Muslim faith or why he doesnt sell Christianity, he just doesn't care enough for any of them.

Its because Bush was super Christian wearing this religion on his sleeve, that in contrast Obama looks like some anarchist in hiding. If the presidency went from Clinton directly to Obama, it wouldnt be that big an issue.

Its not possible to be a Christian and still be willing to reach out to Muslims?

The talking heads have been weighing in on the Obama religion issue from NPR to AM Radio. What I hear repeatedly is the discussion on how Americans could be confused by what "religion" Obama is as he isn't "seen" worshiping in church or punctuating his sentences with amen or Jesus.

What I found troubling was that the majority consensus was that Bush was frequently seen going to church rather than taking it easy on Sunday with his Family as Obama does....realllly? All I can remember seeing Bush do was cut brush at the ranch, I can't think of more than a handful of times he was ever seen in church besides a couple of funerals.

Clinton on the other hand loved him some Gospel!

Why does Bush get a pass for talking about being born again and lovin' the Lord but Obama is an "unknown" even though he has been active in Church life since he met Michelle?

Furthermore, as a practicing Episcopalian myself(you know, the homo lovin' socialists) which is the tradition the Bushes were brought-up in and the church George and Barbara are still members of, I ask: WHY DOES IT MATTER WHAT RELIGION THE PRESIDENT IS ANYWAY?

I really hope that over time people will wake-up and come around.

I can accept 1/3 of this country being wack jobs, but not more than that.

Dude, he's definitely Muslim. Just look at his skin, it's SO obvious.

Just an FYI... Bush was a regular at the First Methodist Church in the Tarrytown neighborhood in Austin when he was governor. I am very good friends with someone who lived in the neighbrhood at the time, was a regular at the church, and I heard "Bush was there Sunday" often enough from the cat.

As for what I saw being behind Bush's faith? The 12 Step Program. In my opinion, much of Bush wearing his religion on his sleeve was for political purposes.

Its possible. With his background he'd be as likely to do that as anyone even if he weren't President. I'm probably inserting too much of my own pre-conceived notions in saying its BECAUSE he's probably agnostic that he can have objectivity to play into both sides. Its religious types that want him to "represent" one side "to the fullest".

About the article, yes its about the economy. He can be Paganist, just keep America working.

I think Obama going to Christian church is done mostly with his political image in mind anyway, or something the wife dragged him into. (Even saying the wife dragged him into it can score political brownie points making him look like a caring husband and family man). I think him even going to the Reverend Wright church was to appeal to the African American demographic in his home district.

    Not surprising.

The National Prayer Day, Obama didnt have any observances of it so they're dinging him hard on that. Even said he's trying to discontinue it altogether. When in all the years in office:
    If you're counting:
Reagan: 1 time out of 8
    Bush Sr: 1/4
    Clinton: 0/8
    Bush Jr: 8/8
    Obama: 0/2

Lets get that MOSLEM out of office!

That might have been the difference in Bush getting re-elected.

Unfortunately, I think 2012 may come down to the minor, stupid details about each candidate. George W. Bush (The worst president in history) won his second term because people were more concerned with religion, supporting women's right to not choose and protecting themselves from continual "red and orange level" security alerts from Fox News.

To me, religion is a private matter. I don't care if Obama, or any candidate, right or left, follows a specific faith. I'm more concerned about improving society, healthcare, supporting the troops through smart decisions and having a diplomatic, reflective leader.

How about the fact that he's not religious. What I find funny is idiots think he's Muslim but want to crush the man about Rev Wright church. What is he a radical Muslim or a radical black Christian? I'm just saying you can't have it both ways.

i'm with ya...but i don't think it's limited to america. i could come up with a list of countries where it would matter a lot easier than i could come up with a list of countries where it wouldn't matter.

Fair enough, I just don't ever recall much of his church activities while POTUS--doesn't matter because I didn't care then or now how often he did or did not attend

People ask why the President does not wear his religion on his sleeve.

The better question is..why should he have to?

I don't get it. Just because he does not wear his religion on his sleeve is indicative of nothing.
