    The reek of desperation...

Speaker at McCain rally says non-Christians want an Obama win

From CNN Political Producer Tasha Diakides

A pastor at a McCain rally said non-Christians are hoping for an Obama win.
DAVENPORT, Iowa (CNN) – A minister delivering the invocation at John McCain’s rally in Davenport, Iowa Saturday told the crowd non-Christian religions around the world were praying for Barack Obama to win the U.S. presidential election.

“There are millions of people around this world praying to their god—whether it’s Hindu, Buddha, Allah—that his opponent wins, for a variety of reasons. And Lord, I pray that you will guard your own reputation, because they’re going to think that their God is bigger than you, if that happens,” said Arnold Conrad, the former pastor of Grace Evangelical Free Church in Davenport.

The remark was made before McCain arrived at the rally but the Republican nominee's campaign quickly put out a statement distancing itself from the remarks.

“While we understand the important role that faith plays in informing the votes of Iowans, questions about the religious background of the candidates only serve to distract from the real questions in this race about Barack Obama's judgment, policies and readiness to lead as commander in chief,” said McCain campaign spokesperson Wendy Riemann.

This incident comes a day after a Minnesota voter asked Senator McCain if Barack Obama was an Arab at a town hall in Lakeville, Minnesota and just three days after Lehigh GOP County Chairman Bill Platt made a speech at a McCain rally in Pennsylvania where he refered to the Democrat nominee for president as Barack Hussein Obama.

Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think "Hindu" is a god. "Hindu" is just someone who follows Hinduism.

And yes, it is desperation and calling out for further division. McCain crowd's hate and ugly side is being exposed.

I wonder if he knows that Allah is the God of Abraham, the same God of Abraham that Christians and Jews worship?

OK, I'm sure he does. But this is going on all over the place. I have a church gig at a conservative Southern Baptist church. The pastor not only talks about other religions as if they're "enemies", but also makes it out that more liberal Christian denominations are "enemies" as well.

I don't believe that God in any way screws with free will and that praying for any candidates victory is basically asking God to MAKE people vote a particular way.

Every day the election gives me something new to feel sad about. And to think I went into this race EXCITED because I felt that we had two candidates who, no matter what happened, were such upgrades from Bush.

Maybe this will cheer you up

    106-year-old voter chooses Obama
    By David Willey
    BBC News, Rome

Sister Cecilia has lived in the convent in Rome for 50 years
A 106-year-old American nun living in a convent in Rome could well be the oldest person to vote in the 2008 US Presidential election.

Sister Cecilia Gaudette, who last voted for President Eisenhower in 1952, has registered to vote and says she will vote for Democrat Barack Obama.

Although hard of hearing, she keeps herself informed by reading newspapers and watching TV at the convent.

"I'm encouraged by Senator Obama," she says.

"I've never met him, but he seems to be a good man with a good private life. That's the first thing. Then he must be able to govern," she adds.

Sitting in her modest office in the convent where she has lived for the past 50 years, the diminutive nun appears uninterested in the row inside the American Catholic church over Senator Obama's support for pro-choice policies on abortion.

Asked about her hopes for the US under an Obama presidency, she says: "Peace abroad. I don't worry about the Iraq war because I can't do anything about it. Lord knows how it will end."

"It is very complicated," she said. "Those Eastern people are not like we are."

But despite taking part in the 4 November election, Sister Cecilia does not intend to return to the US.

"I have no plans for the future. I am too old to go back to the US. Life has changed too much."

But she still watches "very important events" on TV. The election comes under this category.

It also reeks of a coordinated October attack spearheaded by the McCain campaign.

Shocking. A nun who doesn't even live here and has no plans to live here again is voting for Obama. Of course, she's 106...she may be...ahem...having a senior moment.

And once they do, nobody will ever spell out how that in any way could tamper with the fairness of the election. That includes you, Faos.

Too bad God will shatter his "reputation" on Nov. 4...to distance himself from the Religious Right perhaps? But you know those fundies! They'll chalk it up to "another cross to carry" and will pray God lift this plight from his people.

    Christians for Obama.

Honestly, I think Obama would be a better president.

I just don't know if I will vote for him or not.

Is it McCain himself or are you just coming around to Obama ? Not trying to get too deep I'm just curious because you've always been leaned pretty conservative on the board.

Its a bit of both... not liking McCain and not hating Obama, which had created a lot of apathy in my part, whoever gets elected has their pros and cons in my book... so I'm really not that concerned about who gets in.

I was a bit interested in the Palin pick, but she's proved to be a whole lot of lipstick and not a lot of substance, so again my feelings on this election can be summed up in one word...

This is pretty interesting. I have a story similar to this. I was talking to a friend of mine who attends the church I used to attend, and he told me that the youth pastor there gave a sermon to the high school group about Obama being the anti-christ. He was completely serious. He sat there for an hour and gave his "evidence" from the Book of Revelation and told the kids to enjoy what they have left of their lives, because once Obama becomes president, he will impose his new rules against Christianity.

For some reason, many Christians are starting to believe that the Book of Revelation says that the anti-christ will be a 40 year-old Muslim which they equate to Obama. I think this is utterly ridiculous. Anyone else heard of stuff like this?
