Anyone recently driving 290 west of Houston may have noticed a big sign and a lot of dirt work in Waller County. The largest cricket complex in the United States is being built in Prairie View. 14 fields on 84 acres of prime property along the side of 290. My question is why? I'm seriously curious is there that big of demand for cricket?
Huge in the Indian and Pakistani community. It's by far the most popular sport in South Asia. I spent some time in India and enjoy watching it, but I've never played. They always assume I don't know the rules.
have watched my south azn biddies play late nite cricket at the UH Rec parking lot like last decade ago. dunno if that parking lot still exists. but it seemed lot's of fun. watching it on tv otoh...
It's a more popular sport around the world than NFL and MLB combined. I've seen people playing cricket in almost every major and minor city I've ever lived or traveled through.
I know England and Australia are also historically strong in cricket. I was once at a park in Tomball with my family and some guys were playing cricket, and I saw a guy hit a pretty big bomb that was almost a 6 (the equivalent of a homerun in cricket) but then rolled on the ground the last 20 or so feet before crossing the line, making it a 4 instead. There was a big fight about how to score it, so I yelled over to them that I had a great view and that it was clearly a 4. Every completely dismissed my obviously uninformed opinion.
The T20 cricket games (national teams, IPL) are exciting to watch. The game lasts between 2-3 hours, and its usually pretty intense. Each side gets to bat for 20 overs (1 over = 6 balls) and most of the time, the game isnt decided until the last few balls. The 5 day test matches on the other hand....Zzzzzz...
Went to my first cricket match in Essex last month. Weather was perfect, got to drink all day in a VIP tent and had a blast. Three YouTube videos that lasted 30 minutes taught me the rules and it was a fun game to watch once you understand it.
