hey guys not sure if this has happened to anyone before:

I got an email about 30 minutes ago from best buy asking me to buy a protection plan for my recent tv purchase. The problem is that I never bought a tv from best buy.

I went online to my best buy account (i do have a mastercard with them) and I checked my account there was no balance on it at all.

When I called india or wherever they have their call center the guy said there is no pending activity on the card at all and the last purchase made was back in early jan. I checked my other two cards as well and there was no unauthorized purchases on them.

I cancelled my best buy card already, because my other two cards do not have my email (at least the one best buy sent it to) linked to them

Does best buy just randomly start sending out advertisment emails like that? Saying thanks for buying X please buy a payment plan in hopes that someone will buy a payment plan for something that dont even have?

Seems fishy to me but I dont see what or where it could be.

Maybe some sort of phishing site? I get Bank of America, Chase, and Paypal emails all the time telling me to log in and update my account, when I don't even use Bank of America or Chase.

Seriously Phishy. But if any company would do something like this, it's Best Buy. Chances are good that if you're a BB customer who regularly buys stuff there, you bought a TV, hence a blanket spam from them.

Yeah. I hope you didn't go to some link from the email and enter in your information.

no its not fishing because when I clicked their link to buy the plan it had all the necessary info on there from my BB account already...name, phone, address it even had the date I "purchased" the tv but no transaction number

Its exactly the same type of email I got a few months back when I bought a higher end electronics item from them...I kept that email and it appears to be from the same source.

I did purchase a gift card on the same date but not a TV.

but I didnt enter any info in or anything it seems weird I am going to go down to my local best buy and see if they can pull up all transactions made on that day with my info.

That's odd but it does sounds like a fishing type situation, not sure how they would have gotten all your info. Is the link legit i.e. can you get to it from a seperate browser?

I'm thinking this is the answer to your question. BB is run by a bunch of scumbuckets.

Funny you should post this thread...

Someone just got someone a nice Valentine's day gift.

850 dollars worth of stuff at Louis Vuitton in Las Vegas.

This sucks, good thing I have enough money to cover it for now, and even if I didn't the bank says they would pay for the NSF fees...but it's still a ******* nuisance.

ok so I think i got this figured out I went down to BB on my lunch break.

so the purchase was made on 12/23/2009 when I did purchase a gift card for a birthday/xmas gift for a close friend.

but in addition i did also return a bunch of unopened blu-rays I got as a gift or i bought real cheap in exchange for store credit (no receipt) so I had I a 150 dollar store credit gift card and the gift card I purchase.

on that day my dumbass somehow managed to drop the Store credit gift card on my way out of the store I realize this 1/2 way back to work go back and look frantically for it. I cant find it so I go talk to a manager who looks at the store credit receipt I had I pointed out to him the time and date (was about 15 mins prior) and tell him if there was a way to re-issue the card and cancel the previous card he said if nothing was bought on the previous card they could. So luckily for me nothing was bought at the time and I was given a new 150 dollar store credit gift card which along with the gift card I purchased gave to my friend so he could buy his ps3.

So I guess whoever did find that store credit gift card that I dropped was able to make a purchase with it and since i had to give my name and info to make the store credit exchange it was linked to the card.

so it all worked out for me, my friend and the guy/gal who picked up the store credit gift card i dropped. is anything BB is out 150 bucks for providing good customer service for once.

I'll use this thread to vent but this is the 2nd credit card in a row issued to me that a big ticket item was purchased out of state with my CC still in possession. I got the card canceled of course and they will reimburse me of the fraud amount once I fill out and return the paperwork. And I will call one of the credit agencies also.

But this is becoming a pain in the ass because I do have some bills automated to charge to my card every month and I have to call and change the card number again. I suppose I should just mail in my bills and use my next card more sparingly.
