Spoiler Spoiler since its kind of big. Crazy picture though. Talk about a scary moment if you are the guy in the air. ------------ http://www.brownsvilleherald.com/news/brownsville_87322___article.html/along_matamoros.html A Brownsville man is dead and at least four people remained hospitalized Monday in Rio Grande Valley hospitals after being struck by a car while riding in the third annual Bike Tour Matamoros-Playa Bagdad Sunday morning. Alejandro Alvarez, 34, of Brownsville, died at the scene of the accident. Alvarez suffered injuries to his skull and throughout his body, the Mexican news outlet Agencia Reforma reported in a Sunday story. Fourteen others were injured at the scene. Their conditions were unknown. The accident happened at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, just 15 minutes and seven miles into the race, after the cyclists began their ride to Playa Bagdad, Reforma reported. Edgar Omar Castro, 14, also of Brownsville, was listed in critical but stable condition Monday afternoon at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen, VBMC spokeswoman Teri Retana said. She confirmed that two other people who were in the race were being treated at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville, but said she could not provide the names to the newspaper. A fourth person who also was injured in Sunday's accident was transferred to Valley Regional Medical Center, Retana said. The bike race participants were allegedly struck by Jesse Lopez, 29, who drove a 1989 Gran Marquis. Lopez was driving drunk and under the influence of drugs, Matamoros newspapers reported in their Monday editions. A total of 452 cyclists participated in the race, which was 21 miles, but had to be cancelled due to the accident.
In which country? am i looking at it wrong. the drunk driver is on the wrong side of the road, no? in fairness to him, he had to swerve to avoid the police car, right
One time I was doing clinicals in an ER and a cyclist was brought in he was messed up BAD! Blood filled throw up was coming out of him like a volcano and had a broken arm. A squirrel had ran into his spokes. Riding a bike is ScArY!
Why in the hell was the driver drunk at 8:30 in the morning? Anyway, shouldn't the course be closed? Maybe the drunk drive smashed through some barricade to get there.
this is is good reminder for bikers to always wear their helmets... you never know when a drunk driver will slam head on into your pack. the biker in the green (on the left) got really lucky. hope they pull through.
one parting thought. how was the camera man at just the right location at just the right time to snap this photo? thats a one in a million picture.
I know you're trying to be funny, but a guy got killed on an organized ride by a an asleep at the wheel drunk driver and you're making "fair game" comments. Way to be a douche. Even though most everyone biking is wearing a helmet, a car plowing into you is almost guaranteed to break one of your legs and probably get you a broken collarbone. Evan
I'm sure there were a few photographers out there taking stock photos for the local newspapers. It's not a stretch of the imagination.
yeah but it was a ~21 mile course. id think the photographers would snap pics at the start or finish.
