    Windows drives me completely crazy.

You know the right hand side of the task bar, where all those little icons are? How do I get rid of some of these damn things? I don't want Windows Messenger to load. I don't want it to sit in my task bar, periodically reminding me of its irritating existence.

I don't mind the wireless icon except for when it tells me that there is no wireless availability within range. I fcking KNOW that, stupid Windows!!!! I have the damn switch TURNED OFF AND I DON'T NEED TO BE REMINDED OF IT EVERY ******* TIME I HAVE TO RESTART THIS STUPID COMPUTER!!!!

I have America Online sitting in my programs file or directory or whatever the hell its called. How the HELL do I get rid of that?? I've tried throwing it away. I've tried uninstalling it. All to no avail. It just SITS there and REALLY pisses me off.

    ARGH!!!!!

On the slightly lighter side of things, I need more RAM. How do I know what kind of RAM I need? In a similar thread awhile back, someone posted a great link to some site that analyzes your computer and breaks down your options. I did that, then it asked if my laptop uses DDR RAM or some other kind of RAM. I looked all over the bottom for relevant serial/production numbers and also tried to search the system resources. No luck there.

So my questions and needs are these:
    1. Suggest a good site from which to purchase RAM.
    2. Help me figure out exactly what kind of RAM I need.
    3. Help me figure out what kind of graphics capabilities I have for games and whatnot. I've searched high and low and can't find squat about this. I know I don't have a super-gaming machine here, but I'd still like to find out what I do have.
    4. How the hell do I know if I have Bluetooth or not?? According to my control panel and also System Properties --> Hardware --> Device manager, I do, but when I try to actually DO anything with the "Bluetooth Local COM" control panel, it tells me "The Bluetooth Device is not ready." Thanks, Windows. I've tried to transfer files from my phone and my PDA via Bluetooth, so I'm not just sitting here trying to get Bluetooth to work on the PC without a relevant device.

I have (straight from the system properties) a Toshiba Satellite:
    Intel(R) Pentium(R) M @ 1.73 GHz, currently with 512 RAM

I hate this fcking thing. Someone please help me before I completely lose my mind, throw this damn thing off a bridge, and go buy a Mac like I should have done. (All of which I'd happily do, but funds are an issue at the moment)

    Anyway. Thanks.

    www.crucial.com for memory.

Add/remove programs to take off the AOL.

Add/Remove programs>click 'add/remove windows components' on the left side to remove Windows Messenger.

There's a way to turn off ALL bubble messages, but some are beneficial, so you're just going to have to live with the wireless notifications.

You're probably screwed for gaming with that laptop. You probably have an onboard video card, which is good for games about five years old. I suggest Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and Solitaire.

Your bluetooth stack is probably corrupted (if you have bluetooth at all). Read your manual for that one.

    Run > msconfig> startup tab
I think the name is msnger. Not sure, don't have that program. Unclick that and you won't have it start up on you.

While you're there unclick adobe acrobat 32, AIM, qtime, Real player. It's all abbreviated, but if you drag out the command tab to see the full path and name, you'll get a good clue what junk is being started up and causing your startup time stretch to into minutes.

Plus when you see the full path and name, you'll know where that AOL is hiding. The path will be something like "C:\Program Files\AOL"

In order to access it, you need the Explorer window. To open it, hold down the start button on your keyboard and press E (start+e), then in the address bar, copy the command prompt of the AOL from your startup window word for word EXCEPT for the program name (AOL.EXE). Delete everything inside the folder.

note: you should do this after you reboot from changing your startup configuration. Otherwise the AOL program is still running and you can't delete it.

If you google the exact model of your Tosh then it'll tell you what RAM you need (DDR or DDR2?) and whether it has bluetooth installed.

Add/Remove Programs doesn't show it. I should have mentioned that.

    Thanks, otherwise.

IF you still have trouble with messenger, just double click the icon when it opens go to tools/options and click the preferences tab. in the top section make sure to uncheck "start Messenger at windows startup" that will keep it from coming up in the taskbar.

To take care of the wireless notification right click My network places and choose properties. Then right click the wireless connection and choose properties again. Then just uncheck the box at the bottom that says notify me when there is limited or no connection. You can also uncheck the other box and the wireless icon will disappear from the taskbar too.

    1. Suggest a good site from which to purchase RAM.

If you don't mind waiting a couple of days, I would highly suggest buying RAM or any computer hardware from www.newegg.com . They have a huge selection, ship quickly and usually have the lowest prices you can find.

    2. Help me figure out exactly what kind of RAM I need.

you can download this program that will give you all the specs of your mobo, cpu and ram:

    http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-140.zip

open the file to download and once the program is downloaded, you will see this screen with your cpu info:

click on the SPD tab and you will see what type of ram you have:

if you still need help, just post what it says here and i'll decipher it for you. basically, in my system i have PC2-6400 also known as DDR2-800.

    3. Help me figure out what kind of graphics capabilities I have

    right click My Computer
    left click Properties
    left click Hardware Tab
    left click Device Manager
left click on the + next to Display adapters

this will show you what type of video card you have

    4. How the hell do I know if I have Bluetooth or not??

first check that you have a blue tooth receiver on your computer. also there should be a bluetooth program on your computer that you can use to scan for any bluetooth devices and you should be able to sync up with them.

    RAID,
Re: graphics, here's what the device manager says I have:
mobile intel(r) 915gm/gms,910gml express chipset family

I googled it. I got alot of info, but nothing really telling me what good it is or isn't.

Any knowledge about what this means my PC is capable of in layman's terms?

Bluetooth should show up in your Device Manager, if you have it. A lot of computers don't.

It shows up as "Bluetooth RFCOMM from Toshiba."

I have no idea what that means.

this means you have onboard graphics in your computer. instead of having a separate graphics card, it is built into the motherboard. this is normally found in laptops and low end computers as it saves money and power consumption. the bad thing is that performance is not very good so you won't be playing any current games with high settings. i'm not sure what your goal is for the computer but i personally would not expect to use it for gaming as currently configured. to be honest with you though, i'm not sure if you can just buy a separate videocard or if you are stuck with what you have.

Thanks. Like I said: I'm well aware that I'm not going to be using this for any serious gaming. What I want to know is what I can run, and how well I can run it, and I'd like to be able to have an idea of this by having an idea of what my computer can handle.

I don't really have any serious goals for this laptop: I mainly want to have multiple apps open at once without any issues (Firefox with multiple add-ons and multiple tabs open at once, iTunes, Word, etc. all open at once) and maybe some casual gaming. The trouble with games is that I don't know what will run. I don't want to plunk down money on something that I don't expect to run at full capacity anyway only to find out that it won't work at all. RPGs are the only games I like via computer. The rest go to consoles.

Thank you, and thanks to all. You've all been a great help....and I've still got AOL sitting in my start menu.
