My brother works at this plant and was right there when the crane fell. He called my sister in law right after it happened and said he is ok, but she said it sounded like pure chaos. He told her that he saw several guys that knows that were dead. He's a supervisor and also an EMT so he's going to be out there for a while helping out, but hopefully I get to speak to him later. I'm thanking God right now that he's ok, but needless to say I'm a little shaken up.

HOUSTON -- A crane collapse killed four people at an east Houston refinery Friday afternoon, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Officials said a large, industrial crane fell over at the Lyondell-Citgo refinery on Lawndale Street at Highway 225 shortly before 2 p.m.

A company spokesman said four victims died and six others were injured.

Two of the injured were flown by Life Flight helicopter in critical condition. One other was taken by ambulance. Three were treated at the scene.

A Lyondell official said the fatalities were contract employees who have not yet been identified. Lyondell is working with its contracting companies to identify the victims.

"We were in the process of extensive turnaround activity, so we had more than our normal number of contract employees on site," an unidentified Lyondell spokesman said. "It's a very sad day for us here at the refinery."

Company officials said the crane was one of the world's largest and was being leased for maintenance work when it collapsed.

A test was performed on the crane a couple of days ago in which it safely picked up 800,000 pounds. The equipment can pick up 1 million pounds, according to authorities.

Officials said they do not yet know what caused the crane to collapse or what the workers were doing at the time of the accident.

Everyone has been accounted for at the plant, according to company officials.

As many as 3,000 people, including hundreds of contract workers, were at the plant at the time of the accident.

i can't believe it. we do engineering contract work for lyondell and in the year i've been here i pretty much just worked on Coker Turnaround projects for lyondell (although i wasn't on the project the crane was specifically for). i actually just drove by there on wednesday b/c my friend told me i had to see how damn big this crane was. we even mentioned, which seems weird now, that if it fell it could hit the maintenance building that we have had meetings in. i guess it luckily wasn't facing that direction b/c from the few shots i saw on the news it looks like it would landed on that building had it been.

they plan all these projects for years for a 2 week window to do them all, and that 2 weeks was starting next week. i don't know what they're going to do.

and how horrible for the families of the people killed. refineries are such dangerous places but i've always felt fairly safe out at LHR and now this. now i'll be even more uneasy going out there.
