http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/sports/1149680 Get rid of Bill Balleza before getting rid of Roberts!!
This sucks!!! Channel 2 sucks enough as it is. I'd watch the news on another station and flip back just to hear his sports report at the end. This is a sad day for sports in Houston, imo. Sorry to see you go, Craig.
Steve mark is an ******* that guy thinks hes the king of sports well got news for him he sucks. Channel 2 news made a huge mistake getting rid of Craig everytime I called up to the station he was all class. We will miss you Craig but we all know we will see you somewhere doing sports real soon!
Maybe channel 11 will finally fire that goof Giff Nielsen and hire Craig Roberts so we can finally have some quality sportscasting on that station when Butch isn't on.
My favorite Craig moment was when the Astros won their first NL Central banner... Craig was interviewing Bill Spiers and then little Chucky Carr comes running in to hug Billy, the only problem is Chucky had a champagne bottle in one hand, so when he went to hug bill, he slammed Craig in the head with the bottle on accident...what a great moment that was... Seriously, Craig Roberts sucked, and so does Channel 2 news in general. The only local sports guys that are great to listen to are the Fox 26 guys, everyone else sucks compared to them.
Dammit, Craig Roberts was awesome. The guy was always funny to listen to and he knew his stuff, even outside of Houston sports. And I always looked forward to Sports Sunday (had no idea it went back to '83). And the fact he offered to take a pay cut and they refused pisses me off even more. At least Wragge knows what the hell he is doing and is fairly knowledgeable. Steve Mark is worthless and makes so many mistakes per segment it's not even funny. Roberts will definitely be missed.
That sucks.........When I lived in Houston, I enjoyed listening to him on channel 2 and on the Stevens and Pruitt show. With his talent I am sure he will catch on somewhere very quickly
does anyone know why he was fired? were ratings really bad? I live in dallas, so I don't know what's going on back home.
I didn't really like C.R. that much. I though he was a bit uptight, although , it could have been his type of humor...thats just what I think. The sad thing is, he was the best sportscaster in Houston! I seriously don't believe it was just budget and expen$e$ that got him "laid-off". I just dont believe that. There must be some office politics goin' on there. Maybe management thought he was getting old, which is very common in journalism, or perhaps he pissed some of the higher ups off in a meeting or something. Do you guys think another station in Houston will pick him up? BTW, I saw Spenser Tillman on the Last Word w/Jim Rome last nite. Go Spenser, Go!!! He's not doing too bad since he left Houston!
Okay, I haven't lived in Houston for a couple of years, but Channel 2 is really going backwards. I used the watch 2 News in the morning when it was hosted by that awful Dominique Sachse woman. Then, to my horror, she was moved to the night time anchor spot. I think this was around the time that Channel 2 started to think they were in the "visual news presentation" business (pioneered by MSNBC). Oooooo. Pretty graphics but no substance. The only real reason I watched Channel 2 was because of Craig Roberts. I always thought he had a cynical, wry sense of humor, and he was far more entertaining to watch than the other local sports guys. Sports Sunday was great, and he will be missed. Oh, BTW, I've always wanted to kick Roseann Rogers in the face. Repeatedly.
This really was about money. I spoke to one of their reporters recently and was told that the station was probably going to cut back on contracts. I have to believe Roberts was a larger one because of his tenure with the station. Steve Mark was put on the news desk not to long ago because sports was crowded with Roberts, Chris Wragge and others. I gotta believe KPRC laid out some big bucks to drag Wragge away from Entertainment Tonight and other national offers, so it would stand to reason that they had to cut back the sports budget. I was talking with another knowlegable local journalist recently and mentioned that I thought local news was getting wierder and wierder. I was told to expect that sports, which on most stations is relegated to 2 minutes wrapped around a commercial break, would get cut even further and to expect less weather as well. I was told that stations are increasingly going to non-news, Hard Copy type stuff because they feel like it pulls in the ratings. By the way, channel 2 was 2nd overall in the ratings book prior to sweeps week from what I heard but their sports may have been as low as 4th, but I'm pretty sure Giff and channel 11 took that honor.
In the 80's, channel 2 sports was tops but then they fired Hockey Bart and it's been all down hill since then.
