Most all of these take me back:
    10. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out
    9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
    8. Mega Man
    7. Solomon's Key
    6. The Empire Strikes Back
    5. Ninja Gaiden
    4. Ghosts & Goblins
    3. Friday the 13th
    2. Contra (they address the 30-man code)
    1. Battletoads

I think it's a fair list overall. I never played Solomon's Key, Friday the 13th, or Battletoads. I don't remember if I played the original Mega Man, though I did play and beat its sequels. Kids today have it easy, what with save points and check points. I don't know how many times I had to replay a long-ass level(s) after some boss handed my ass to me.

As for the ones I did play:

I beat Punch Out, as did most people I know, but Tyson throttled us all at first. I actually had a harder time with Bald Bull than any other opponent. I know: gut-shot on the third hop, but I always effed it up for some reason. Have the game and want the code for Tyson? 007 373 5963. I have no idea how I remember that, but there it is.

I've heard people on this board gripe about the NES version of TMNT numerous times. I remember it was frustratingly difficult, but I think I'm about the only person on the planet to beat that game.

I beat all the various Star Wars games for NES and SNES, but ESB was a pain. Luke was pretty much useless unless you managed to collect all the Force powers, which was impossible if you missed the 'float/fly' Force power or somehow ran your Force Meter dry.

Ninja Gaiden was AWESOME back in the day, and though I beat it, it was damn dear impossible - stupid birds attacking my super-ninja mid-jump and I'd fall to an untimely death over and over and over, or they'd just come along and knock me off the wall I was clinging to.

Ghosts & Goblins was easily the most aggravating game I ever played, whether it was the arcade version or the Nintendo. This game pissed me off to no end and resulted in more than one hurled controller. I never could figure out why I was so bad at this stupid game, but man was I ever.

Contra was damn near impossible until I learned about the code, which was soon after I started playing it. Then it got easy. I always felt like I was cheating by using that code, though.

My own contribution is this one:
One of my favorite games ever that I never beat was the original Castlevania for the NES. I whupped up on Dracula numerous times only to get him to change into that huge-ass werewolf thing, which would always proceed into mud-hole-stomping mode. Maybe this one doesn't really belong, but it does to me simply because no matter how many times I tried, I could never beat that freakin' game.

    Anybody got one?

Are you talking about TNMT 1? (edit: saw the link.)

I beat that game about five or six years ago with literally one spec of life left. Looking back, I don't know how I did it. That game is hard.

I could never beat Ninja Gaiden 1. That's the most difficult NES game I ever played. I couldn't even beat it with the Game Genie.

I remember playing Super Ghosts n Goblins and finally beating it, and then having it start all over.. I think I threw the controller through my wall.

    Although the music was cool...

I had and beat Rygar for the NES, but I was super bummed when it was NOTHING like the arcade, which totally ruled. Hell, I'm off to find a ROM of this one for MAME right now....

RoboCop on the NES. I remember once a buddy of mine in the early '90s brought his NES when he stayed overnight at our house, and everyone went to sleep. I didn't. I played that thing up until maybe 4 or 5 in the morning by myself, my thumbs hurt like hell and wasn't ever able to beat the entire game. I remember one of the toughest BOSSes was ED-209, which was extremely difficult. I never got to Dick Jones that's what she said. :(

I beat the arcade version of this, but the Nintendo version was another story.

I had a Solomon's Quest game for the Gameboy, I assume its similar. I never got past like level 3, but I was young... Who knows...

There was a Robocop vs Terminator game for Genesis, I put in a code for 99 lives once and still could not beat the final boss.

What was impossible about Mike Tyson's Punch Out? I used to beat that game daily. I was 8 years old but still.

For some reason my record after beating Mike was always either 14-0 14KOs or 15-0 15KOs

I never understood why sometimes I would get an extra fight.

If E.T. for the Atari 2600 is not on the list... they obviously never played it.

That is THE most irritatingly impossible old-school video game.

Even with the 30 man code I could never beat Contra. Also, I don't know if it counts as an old school video game but the new Mega Man 9 is hard as hell (TWSS).

8 Eyes is the hardest game of all time, period.

It's not up to debate. No other answer is acceptable. That game is impossible to beat without codes. The end.

I'm glad they kept it a list of irritating impossbile old-school video games that had playability to them. Instead of the crappy games with design flaws, unresponsive controls & what not. Like this E-Terd of a game, ugh....

Empire Strikes Back on Atari was the first time in my video game life I experienced game frustration. I knew there was a point to it but my adolescent mind wasnt patient enough to figure it out  Funny to think back then it was about not dying instead of advancing and completing.

Ghosts n Goblins ticked me off bad. I was in anti-cheat mode at the time but I think I finally gave in on this one.

    another nintendo nerd review

MT's Punch Out was pretty easy once you got the hang of it. There were actually harder guys than him.
