LA Times Story Anyone have a particular problem with this? On one hand, it's fairly discriminatory to essentially kick two students out for what seems like at worst some PDA; but it is technically a private school, and considering that the country is OK with separating schools by gender and race already, maybe this is acceptable?
My problem is that, as a Christian, I'm not thrilled with Christian schools that allow us to "retreat" from society instead of engaging it. Creating "us" vs. "them" that I find no match for in the Gospel. Like building gyms in churches so the saints never have to mix with the others to work out. But I'm weird that way. As it is...it's a private school with rules that I'm sure were probably made pretty clear ahead of time.
anyone want to bet that if their behavior been described as "consistent with being Black" that there would have been a different outcome?
Most of the churches around here that have gyms use them for ministry. We had a Thursday night basketball ministry at one church I used to attend. The minister could hoop some but had a terrible temper and sharp elbows. Another church in this community has a nice little gym for about $20/month and $35 or so for a family. Members get a slight discount I think. I like churches that seek to be more inclusive. Their schools should do likewise.
As a private school. They totally have the right to. Just look at Bob Jones University for a good example
I'm extremly uncomfortable with the concept that church membership has benefits. Extremely. Beyond extremely. Pick up your cross...it's not a country club. Which gets me into the whole, "church is a group of people, not a place" discussion as well. These issues move me more than any others. The church has lost Jesus. It's more concerned with property committees and membership benefits. Build a gym...subsidize it...and let those who couldn't afford it otherwise use it. Build it for the community. Leverage resources for the common good.
I didn't mean to convey the idea that this place was a country club. It is a very pedestrian gym that is open to the community and it does a great job of getting unchurched community members into the place where they might make that human contact that brings them back for fellowship and service. This is a great church of outreach not a place of exclusivity... http://www.fcc-kville.org/Home
and well-meaning... no problem. I didn't want to mis-represent even if it was a church over a thousand miles away from those in Houston. My youngest daughter went to Pre-K there and had a great experience.
If this thread were in the hangout there'd be a lot more discussion about the lesbian catholic schoolgirls angle. And picture requests.
Do I have a problem with the court decision? Not at all. It's a private school, and they should be able to restrict their membership in many ways within reason. There's a Southern Baptist College in Florida that has separate sidewalks for men and women. Do I have a problem with the decision to expel them? Yeah. There might be details that I don't have that would change my mind, but on it's face I have a problem with it. I think homosexuality is sinful, but if a church starts banning sinners, Jesus would be lonely. My problem is that so many churches treat homosexuality as special sin. And no, it's not okay to start kicking out people for being greedy or gluttonous or quarrelsome, just to justify kicking the gays out.
Lesbianism is a sin in the bible and it's a Christian school. What is "consistent behavior with being black"? I don't suppose it's going to church school and studying the Bible.
If they get *any* public money this will be undone. but I do find it interesting QUESTION: Why are we ok with FORCING a religious school to allow Lesbianism but Pissed off is a Public School has a Prayer in the morning? Discrimination against Lesbians .. NNNOOO!!!! Discrimination against Religioun/religious folx. . .well not place for that in the public Rocket River
Isn't the entire theme of the Bible that everyone is a sinner? Are lesbians worse sinners than everyone else for some reason?
Why is that confusing? The prayer is a specific religion in a group of students of multiple religions. Why does the one religion get preference? In general, if you can't replace Christianity with Satanism in a situation like this, it's not going to be allowed. A Christian or a Satanist can privately pray at school if they'd like. No school would allow a schoolwide prayer by a Satanist - so they wouldn't allow it by a Christian either.
