With six games left, the Astros are out of the playoffs as of today but will be in with a 5-1 record the rest of the way due to the other teams playing against each other. Worst case scenario- Det goes 1-2 vs Clev and beats Bost 2-1. Houston will need to win 5 games to overtake Detroit. Otherwise we'd need Toronto to beat Boston or Texas to beat Clev 2 games. Best scenario- Det sweeps Clev 3-0. Then we are in with a 4-2 record or 3-3 if Tex beats Clev just 1 game. Good scenario- Clev sweeps Det 3-0. If Boston wins 2 games vs Det then we are in with a 3-3 record. If Bos wins 1 game then 4-2 record. If Boston loses all 3 to Detroit 0-3 then we can still beat out Boston going 4-2 if the Blue Jays best Boston once. Another good scenario- Det goes 2-1 vs Clev. Clev loses one game to Texas then we are in with a 4-2 record. Either way, it's difficult for Clev to finish 4-2 and Boston and Detroit no worse than 3-3 with the head-to-head match ups. So us going 4-2 should do it outside of that. We just need to beat two bad teams 4 out of 6 times and we are most likely in. I'd say 95% chance.
True, they hold their own destiny still. But like others have said, if the season ended today they would not be in.
Here is a great scenario. Astros sweep Oakland, Cleveland sweeps Detroit, and Toronto sweeps Boston. Astros clinch in that scenario due to Boston and Detroit playing each other to end the season. Astros would win 87 games and it would be guaranteed that one of Boston or Detroit would win less than 87 games. The Astros are in a great spot here actually, despite the disappointment of this past weekend. 88 wins is a near lock to get them in. Even 87 wins they will have a decent chance. Guaranteed to gain or lose ground every game this week…so it really is up to them to just go out and win. Scoreboard watching is almost irrelevant.
Appreciate the op. It is remarkable that with everything that has transpired this season, and with how bad we (yes I know some of you get your feathers ruffled when somebody says ‘we’) have looked lately, that ‘we’ are still in control of ‘our’ postseason chances. The most injured season of all time by all metrics, blundering manager, f’n Framber, and still in control Just get in, 5-1, road warrior time, and we may have the full offensive brigade for the postseason. WGAF that there will be an enormous circle jerk in Seattle when they clinch. Just get in
