Could Tracy McGrady come back next year...as our starting Point Guard?

Jeff Van Gundy has always said that he felt McGrady was one of the best passers in the league, including PGs in the discussion. He has all the tools, really. Now that he evidently can't shoot anymore, and can't really drive anymore, why not? He is no longer an elite offensive option.

Why I think we could mold him into a good PG.

    1. He has superior court vision and playmaking ability, he plays PG for us at times anyway late in games. Why not give it to him full time?

    2. He has enough athleticism to guard quicker PGs, he would harass them with his length, and be quick enough to stop them from penetrating.

    3. No one would be able to match up with our length, imagine a lineup of:

    McGrady
    Artest
    Battier
    Scola
    Yao

How can you guard that? I'd love to see Chris Paul try to matchup with anybody in that lineup, we'd just post the opposing PG up, completely neutralizing guys like Paul, Nash, etc. and turning them into defensive liabilities.

Why I think it would not work:

    1. T-Mac's ego won't let it, he would want to score more than run the offense.

What do you guys think? Worth trying out?

HE is coming off a knee surgery. So i dont think it would be good for him to go against quicker guards. But I still want him to be a houston Rocket

This has been suggested a hundred times since I've been on this forum.

The problem with your argument is that this: "2. He has enough athleticism to guard quicker PGs, he would harass them with his length, and be quick enough to stop them from penetrating." is just completely, utterly, totally wrong.

No. McGrady has nowhere near the quickness to defend point guards. I could actually see him in a Stackhouse, Ginobli, or (much better) Michael Finley type of role - come on off the bench to score and destroy other teams' second team...If he would accept that role. But he has to play within the offense even then.

McGrady would get raped on defense if he ever tried to guard Chris Paul, Deron Williams, or Tony Parker. Even more than AB. TMAC can't guard point guards. They'd take him off the dribble every single time down the court.

His athleticism was declining to the point that he had some trouble guarding quicker SG for the last few seasons. No way he comes back from microfracture at 30-31 years old and can suddenly guard PG.

I always frown on the "Tmac at PG?" comments due to his inability to guard quick players but on the flipside I have always envisioned him as a Steve Smith type of player as he ages. I don't see any reason why the guy couldn't become a 17/7/7 guy if he wanted to. With his size, wingspan and court vision he can remain a very effective player well into his 30s if he was committed to the game.

There will always be a mismatch for McGrady somewhere on the court if he is interested in exploiting it.

Cassell has a better chance of spinning a cocoon and coming out as a butterfly instead of the worm he is.

Brain Cook has a better chance of becoming the rockets 1st option before that happens.

Not to mention how completely nonsensical his basic premise is:

    - McGrady can't drive or shoot, but he can be an effective point guard.
    - He doesn't have the athleticism to drive, but he has the athleticism to defend against Chris Paul.
    - He wouldn't want to run the offense because of his ego -- wth?

And his assumptions are completely bogus as well:
McGrady couldn't shoot and drive effectively because he had a knee injury. Nobody expects him to return to pre-injury form, but the statement that he basically can't shoot or drive at all anymore is just silly. And despite the knee injury, he actually shot better from behind the 3 point line than he had ever done in his career.

This thread fails on too many levels.

I am tired of the T-mac for point guard thread. T-mac is 6-7 he is not a point guard, never will be a point guard and we have two young talented athletes at the PG spot already. I think Kyle Lowry will eventually be our starting PG... If he can develop a 3 point shot, he will be lethal.

i dont' think tmac can guard pgs he already has a hard time guarding bigger players...he needs to guard slower less mobile guys like sf and pf's...but as far as him running point. I'm all for it

As long as he's not looking to score first i'd be interested in seeing how well he can facilitate and run an offense.

But most of his assists come from ppl fearing him as a scorer. No if he can't move and score like before will it effect his chances of making sweet assists? i think so, but still curious to see the experiment.

Tmac doesnt need to do anything at the point, as long as he gets 5+ assist and gets the ball to yao everytime?...Its sad because some people on here actually believe that

Even though this idea is crazy.

You do realize there has been a 6'8 point guard before right?
