Assuming the Rockets could get any of the following at the veteran's minimum salary, would any of the following help us or would they just send the team into luxury tax Hades:

Rod Strickland, Walt Williams,Jim Jackson, Greg Anthony, Tim Hardaway, Dana Barros, Mookie Blaylock, Mitch Richmond, Dell Curry, Grant Long, Robert Pack, Charles Oakley or J.R. Ryder?

I'd love to have Oakley or Curry but I'm fairly sure the Rocks think they have the team to take them through the season.

My understanding is that the vet minimum is in the $1.0m range and would not move the Rocks above the LT penalty.

I'm waiting to see if Glen Rice is truly physically able to contribute. If not, the very young Rockets could use Walt Williams...a no brainer fit from a chemistry stand point.

Dell Curry would be the only other from the list that (IMHO) would provide vet leadership, make a reasonable contribution, and not upset team chemistry.

I agree, Walt is not exactly ancient, he can play four positions and he meshes with the team personality-wise. He would be an option if Mickeal and Torres both prove insufficient, something I don't see happening.

Forget about Walt, he's history. Boki superceded him.

If we didn't already have Moochie, I'd snatch up Mookie Blaylock in a heart beat. I'd also consider Jim Jackson or Mitch Richmond as a backup SG.

Other guards to consider, would be Voshon Lenard & Trajan Langdon.

At the forward position, I'd consider Zendon Hamilton(C/F), Scott Padgett, & Walt.

Of the remaining FA centers, there are only 2 that I would be interested in (based on potential), Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje & Loren Woods. Unfortunately, both are restricted FA's & their respective teams would most assuredly match any offer.

Here's the list of available FA's & what teams they've signed with.

Jim Jackson, a #4 pick, never has lived up to his potential, but he does have a nice shot. I don't know whether he has any defense in him. Still, I wonder why he never made the grade. I don't recall any personality issues like J.R. Ryder. Could Rudy motivate him as backup SG?

Jackson and a team mate fought over Toni Braxton. Other posters probably have better details. (Damn, I don't blame him! ;) )

We do need a backup SG.Mobley should'nt have to play 40 minutes a night. We do need a big guard,Torres has good size but if he does poorly in the camp we should look at Jackson or Leonard.
Jackson is an average defender at best but can also play at the 3 spot which could help us if Rice went down.
Leonard is only 6'4" but is physically strong and does put an effort on the defensive end. He also has a good outside shot.
I don't want Walt back either.

Jackson did not get along right from the start. He was drafted by Dallas and held out well into the season. When the Mavs capitulated to his salary demands, they prorated his pay to exclude the game he held out. "Oh no - got to pay me for it all" and extending the holdout was threatned or occured.

RE Braxton, he fought with Jason Kidd. That team had the three J's (Jason Kidd, Jackson, and Jamal Mashburn) and were supposed to have the building blocks for a long time. All three turned out to be spoiled cry babies. Each felt he had to be the man. Teamwork was cleary unimportant to any of them. At one point they got the coach fired, buy not playing hard, and then bragged about it. What asses! May have been Jim Clemmons, but I think it was before him.

Trying to solve the chemistry problem, Dallas let them go one at a time. Kidd was causing problems, but at least being quiet about it. Kidd won out as he was the one they kept, but he continued as a problem child, so they traded him. Findley and I think Steve Nash. At the time Dallas was widely trashed for not rolling over to its players, just as the Clippers are now.

All three have done a lot of growing up, but I can see why management staying away.

One thing about picking somebody up, is you have to let somebody go. There are only 12 roster spots, plus the three extras.

Ming, Cato, Taylor, Griffin, Thomas, Rice, Boki, Mobley, Francis and Moochie make up 10. Maddox, TMo, and Torres I think are fighting for the last two spots. That loser Collier, Brown and some training camp sensation make 16.

If you add a vetran, someone has to get pushed to the IR (Whatever it called now) and some one cut. And keep in mind, we need three centers.

Not impossible to sign a vet, but one year of benc play does cost us a chance to see if a player like Torres, Brown or TMo will develope.

i would add J. Jackson. but we would have minnimum minutes to go along with his minimum contract.

if it were possible, i would have moockie teach steve some 'D'.
