I am all into conspiracy theories so try this one on for size. Morey calls Charlotte and gets them to make the offer to Landry, knowing he will match, as an incentive, Morey has a side deal on the table to trade Head or another asset to Charlotte to get them to do this. Why would they do this? Because Baker and Morey's relationship has been strained. The Charlotte offer is not all that much, if they really wanted him why not offer him more, or more years? It just smell fishy to me. DD
I assume the threat of severe penalties by the NBA would preclude Houston and Charlotte from participating in such a charade.
Even though the Rockets have insisted that they'd go all the way up to the full MLE to retain Landry, I have a feeling that they are more conflicted about him than we the fans are. Maybe there's a decent chance we don't match. It just seems strange that the Bobcats would offer such a contract, without some reasonable expectations that we would not agree to the same terms. I know we all follow this stuff semi-religiously and it seems like a no-brainer deal for us, but I would think that another NBA franchise would have better insight into this stuff.
I dont think Morey would do something that stupid. Im sure there would be penalties if the league ever found out something like this happened. Besides, if Landry didnt think 9 million was enough he wouldnt sign the offer sheet. If the Rox felt they would pay the 9 million why would they go through Charlotte in the first place, they would have just offered that to Landry straight up. More importantly, the reason that Charlotte didnt offer more is Landry isnt worth more at this point. Everyone who screamed that Morey needed to just hurry up and give the max MLE to Landry should now realize he is far smarter then they are. I think the Rox were low balling Landry at three years and 6.8 million and were going to wait it out till he got another offer. Now that he has, I think the Rox will match and Landry will get his true market value which is 9 million for three years.
Is this considered illegal? I assume it is. But I'm sure things like this go down all the time. Perhaps the Bobcats initiated this ordeal and would HOPE that Morey would return the favor down the line. In other words, maybe the Bobcats and Morey had no under-the-table deal going, but they are hoping he will respond with kindness in the future.
The bobcats basically did the same thing last year with Varejao. They offered him a similar deal and Cleveland matched. I used to live in Charlotte and that franchise is run like a joke. I think they are hoping to land him, but I doubt they expect to land him.
Yes it sure would be! DM is smart but I don't think he would do such a devious thing as to collude with MJ and the Bobcats just to trick Landry. The Rockets have been waiting for Landry to sign an offer just so they get an idea of his marketing value. If expect the Rockets to match the offer and sign Dorsey by the end of the week. all would be left to complete the picture is Deke.
i thought so too, but i think its more reasonable to think that the bobcats are making one last ditch effort to update their roster before camp. no one else worth signing is out there. why not see if the rockets match without seeing any medical info on the knee?
Bingo! Landry probably feels like this is the best offer he will get and has no problem playing for either organization so why not sign the offer sheet? Plus from the Chron article Baker didn't sound like the relationship between Morey and himself was strained.
If Landry has accepted Bobcats will have to fax the Rockets some papers. Feigen should know or be able to find out if they've gotten any.
Honestly I do not think Bobcats is doing us a favor at all. Even if I am in the minority side, I would feel that the 3Y/9M off place us in a dilemma... Let's see how our magician responds to it...
I think if you could be a fly on the wall in any GM's office, you'd be suprised how much 'collusion' goes on in every sport. *cough cough, bud selig** cough**
Aren't the Bobcats under the cap? This offer just seems low to me if they really really wanted Landry. I am just speculating for fun.... And isn't any deal contingent upon the player passing a physical?????? DD
you forgot the part where after we sign him we find out Landry's knee is going to be a chronic problem. keep in mind that we still don't even know whats truly wrong with his knee, nor what it will take to fix it.
yeah but colluding on barry bonds is one thing. taking those same risks for a measly 3mil/year bench player is a totally different animal. youre right though, it's possible it goes on alot more than i'd like to believe. then again, this IS charlotte we are talking about. the texans of the NBA. no decision of theirs should surprise anyone.
I'm not so sure that any of this would be illegal. If the league cares so much about this type of thing, I imagine there would have been a full-scale investigation on the Josh Smith offer sheet from the Grizzlies. The Hawks had a hell of lot more incentive to get Smith signed to an offer sheet than the Rockets did with Landry.
