This would be really silly if it were not so tragic. Cornyn and the Repubs are holding up Holder's nomination because they want assurances that he will not prosecute people who tortured in our name. This shows the absurdity of the Republican position on torture. They can't admit it's illegal under US, International, and Treaty laws, but they have to ask that people not be prosecuted for committing the crime so they can pretend it's not a crime. Clear? If they were so confident it is not a crime it seems they would welcome a trial so they could prove how what they don't call torture is really not torture, but then, of course, they would never take that risk because it is so clear that what they don't call torture is indeed torture.
This, of course, ignores the other possibility. It could be that they don't believe these actions to be illegal, but in the crapstorm that has ensued they are afraid that the new AG will prosecute to make an example of people. They may not want these folks and their families to go through that. After all, that would be torture.
Well we have the Bush appointee who is a lifelong Republican saying by the legal definition of the word, the U.S. used torture at Gitmo. I don't think there can be much doubt that a crime was committed.
It is broken. I actually knew the end of the post was jocular, but I failed to pick it up as a whole.
Between this and holding up Clinton's confirmation, John Cornyn is doing a fantastic job at making sure he gets completely shut out by this White House for the next 4 years. Way to screw Texas over there, Johnny boy.
...operating in good faith based upon their understanding of what the law was,"said Cornyn. Wasn't Cornyn a Texas Supreme Court Justice? What a bunch of BS.
You should read the opinions he wrote as a Texas SC Justice. Then you would know that this is not his first foray into BS.
Cornyn at it again... What is he up to? He can't seriously be considering a presidential run in 2012...can he?
