I am planning to buy a vcr/dvd recorder where I can record them over to a DVD. If I have some old tapes that doesnt have the Recordable Square ( the little square on the bottom left side of the tape to prevent from being copied), what can i do??? I have heard putting scotch tape over it, but doesnt not know does it work. Any suggestions..................
Those squares are to prevent you from copying onto that tape (so you can't tape over it), it doesn't stop you from transferring onto another tape/dvd.
Be careful with your purchase. If you have original VHS tapes of movies and if those tapes have Macrovision (a form of copy-protection) on them, some dvd/vcr combo units will ignore the macrovision and copy to dvd anyway, and some won't (they'll alert you saying that it's copyguarded and the copy will fail). go to http://www.videohelp.com to research the unit you're interested in.
If you have a digital cam with a computer link (firewire/USB), you can stream the video tape to the cam and the cam to the computer. The quality is one of the best and you get the pleasure/pain of editing your movies to fit onto the DVD.
