How long does a written warning for a traffic stop stay on with the police department? I know it doesn't go on your record.

I rolled through a stop sign and he let me off with a warning, but I had to sign for it.

It shouldn't matter. You should call the PD and ask them

Not my experience. I've received more warnings than tickets. The circumstance and your attitude toward the cop has the most to do with whether they give you a ticket. Rolling stop in a low traffic area? Being courteous and apologetic will probably get you a warning. Most of them are expecting a hassle and will respond in kind.

because some PDs will maintain the right to convert the warning into a citation if you are stopped again, within a specific time period. It can be treated like traffic citation differed adjudication. So cops like written warnings, because if it's not a big deal, then they don't have to waste time going to court.

OP should state who gave him the warning, so we can better answer the question...or called the department and ask.

must depend on the cop. being nice and polite never got me anywhere. i agree, though, that being rude will get you a ticket every time and they will tack another on if they can as a result of being rude (or talking back in a pissy attitude). that happened to me before. but, i have tried the polite and cooperative approach as well to no avail. i don't think i would ever get a warning. cops just don't like me.

first thing he said was...hey you just rolled through that stop sign there..so license and registration please.
    me: (nervous laugh)..oh man!
cop: man, for some reason everyone in your neighborhood just loves going through that stop sign (btw this is a T-intersection. you essentially do have to stop). i sit out here and catch people all the time.

then he came back 10 mins later and was like well just sign here for your warning. "stop signs are there for a reason" i was like i know... then he said "i am sure he rolled through it before, just got caught today".

    (nervous rambling/happy it's just a warning)
i was like u know i have lived in that neighborhood for over 10 years now..I should know better..plus u know trying to get to work by 10

he was like have a good day man..i said thanks you too!

Don't worry about it. Its Brazoria County Sherrif
I have received several warnings from them before. Actually twice within a month. One deputy told me that he has to have me sign so there is a record of him working otherwise he wouldnt even bother and just let me go...I dont think BCS ever write tickets :p

I once got pulled over for making an illegal Uturn at a stop sign and for speeding. I'm always polite (after all it was my fault), and then I asked for directions because I had made a wrong turn and told the officer what I was doing - Shooting highlights of HS Basketball games for the High School Xtra. I think I earned his sympathy - he gave me directions and a warning.

For the most part - if you are polite to the officers and don't talk back - they will be polite to you regardless of if they give you a ticket or not.
