Cops find suspected car bomb in Times Square

    May 1, 11:54 PM (ET)

    By TOM HAYS

NEW YORK (AP) - Police evacuated buildings and cleared streets of thousands of tourists around New York City's Times Square after finding an apparent car bomb in a parked SUV.

New York City police say a mounted police officer noticed smoke coming from the SUV at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press that bomb investigators found propane tanks, powder and an apparent timing device inside the vehicle. The official wasn't authorized to release the information and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Police evacuated several residential and commercial buildings and cleared several streets of thousands of tourists milling around on a warm Saturday night.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

NEW YORK (AP) - Pedestrians were barred from parts of New York City's Times Square as police closed streets to investigate a car that has been "deemed suspicious."

Police said Saturday the bomb squad was investigating the contents of the car on 45th Street. They say the block was closed between Seventh and Eighth avenues as a precaution.

Paul Bresson, head of the FBI's public affairs office at bureau headquarters in Washington, said agents are on the scene with the New York Police Department and that the matter is being taken seriously.

A senior Obama administration official said a Nissan Pathfinder was found with a suspicious package, but officials are not yet sure whether it was a bomb. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official wasn't authorized to speak on the matter.

AP Washington bureau chief Ron Fournier contributed to this report.

That is a very very scary thing to hear. I'm glad the bomb didn't go off and everyone was safe.

This is the first I'm hearing about it. There were two bomb threats in los angeles earlier this week too. Don't know the outcome, I think one was a hoax, but that's two big cities in one week.

I hadn't heard about it, either. I was probably like most people around here keeping tabs on the Mayweather fight. I just found it interesting that it took almost 30 min for anybody (including myself) to post a comment.

Pretty crazy... Times Square is usually very busy, especially on a Saturday Night. If that thing went off... I could suspect major casualties. Good thing they found it.

Mayor Bloomberg confirmed the vehicle did contain an explosive device. Scary.

It sounds like a pretty weak car bomb to me. Gasoline and propane with consumer grade fireworks? This crew doesn't sound very hardcore and I'm sure the suspects were caught on one of the many cameras in the area.

the only thing the bombers could hope for is car near by exploding as well. I doubt this bomb would kill anyone outside of 50 feet.
