Former Dukes of Hazzard star calls movie 'sleazy'

    By DOUG GROSS
    Associated Press

ATLANTA — A former star of the The Dukes of Hazzard TV show is urging fans to skip the forthcoming movie version, calling it "a sleazy insult."

Ben Jones, a former Georgia congressman who played the wisecracking mechanic Cooter on the popular series from 1979 to 1985, said profanity and sexual content in the film make a mockery of the family-friendly show.

"Basically, they trashed our show," said Jones, who read a script of the Warner Brothers movie, which is scheduled to be released next month. "It's one thing to do whatever movie they want to do, but to take a classic family show and do that is like taking I Love Lucy and making her a crackhead or something."

On Wednesday, Jones wrote an open letter to fans on his Web site, urging them to stay away.

"From all I have seen and heard, the Dukes movie is a sleazy insult to all of us who have cared about the Dukes of Hazzard for so long," Jones wrote. "Unless they clean it up before the August fifth release date I would strongly recommend that true blue Dukes fans hold their noses and pass this one up."

A spokeswoman at Warner Brothers did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment on Wednesday.

The Dukes of Hazzard was a surprise hit for CBS, pitting "good-ol' boys" Bo and Luke Duke and their moonshine-running Uncle Jesse against the crooked politician Boss Hogg and his bumbling henchman, Sheriff Coltrane, in fictional Hazzard County.

Jones was elected to Congress in 1988 as a Democrat. He lost his bid for a third term in 1992 after his district was redrawn. He owns Cooter's Place, a Dukes memorabilia shop in Gatlinburg, Tenn.

Yeah, I know that when I think of "family friendly", the first things that come to mind are rednecks purposefully breaking the law, running from cops, breaking out of jail, running moonshine, and a chick wearing a thong made out of denim...

When you think about it - the only way the movie is being promoted is by using the "Daisy Duke" sex appeal.

Oh, so the EXACT SAME WAY they promoted the show, then.

I've been watching Dukes of Hazzard reruns on CMT. Name one episode in which the Duke boys broke the law before Roscoe and Boss put them in that predicament? And when the Duke boys broke the law, they were doing it for good. Also, Uncle Jesse was a former moonshine runner but never did it on the show.

Umm no. Daisy may have been dressed like a hooker but there was no sexual innuendo like there will be in the movie.

To argue that the original show was not family friendly is hilarious.

Well, the kids who watched this show on tv or in syndication are all grown up and not interested in watching an exact rehash. When I catch a rerun on CMT, I laugh at how horrible the show actually is. As a wee lad, I only cared about the car and that scene from the opening credits where Daisy is in a bikini. I don't know if I've ever actually seen that episode.

Who's arguing it wasn't family friendly? But they sure as hell DID promote the show with images of the General Lee and Daisy. That was the whole show! And what a show it was... for 6-year-olds, which is why I loved it.

And gee, now that there's a movie, guess what the ads feature? The General and Daisy. I guarantee you that's what people will be going to the movie to see, family-friendly or not.

No it wasn't. The show's appeal was
    1) the good guys always out-smarted Boss Hogg and Roscoe
    2) the good guys always helped capture each weekly bad guy
    3) it was super cool to see the stunts - car jumps galore
    4) Daisy was pretty and sexy

Daisy was only a small part of the show's appeal. The car was cool, but the stunts were what really attacted kids.

Uh, yeah. I know I *always* tuned in to see the weekly bad guys. Roscoe and Boss were great supporting characters, but were merely foils to the exploits of the Duke boys and their muscle car. They certainly weren't why people tuned in.

    That's what *I* said.

Sure, Daisy took a huge backseat (er, so to speak) to the General Lee and its awesome jumps (the very REASON the car was cool), but I can guarantee you more people tuned in to watch her than to watch Boss Hogg or see the Dukes catch the baddies.

Are we seriously having an argument about the Dukes of Hazzard? I hope no women are reading this...
