I know this is a slam-dunk for some of you guys. Please help me understand my options. The only thing I can find available is the Hammacher Schlemmer 74083 for $99.95. Unfortunately, you have to order it unless you live in New Yawk.

I'd like to hear comments from anyone with experience using it. If there are other choices, please describe and point me in the right direction. Ideally I could rent something for a period of time and return it.

Are there places (specifically local Houston) that will do this for me? If so, how much? I've got a LOT of negatives and slides so the price needs to be reasonable.

The "advantage" if I buy one is friends and family will put me to work and I'll get my money's worth. But the quality has to be good enough.

    Thanks for the advice. :)

A3PO, buy a good scanner that will scan slides and negatives. You can take old photos you can't find the negatives for and do amazing things with some of the software out there. I've got this one, which I like, and it came with some good software. I love that it has an LED light... no warmup time!

    Overview

Professional Quality and Speed for Photos and Film. No Warm-up Time.
Sleek and fast, this powerful scanner will impress you the very first time you push power. With high-luminance white LED lamps — it's ready to scan immediately, with no warm-up time needed. You'll quickly produce spectacular results, with max. color dpi resolution of 4800 x 9600. Seven easy buttons automate the scanning process, so it's simple to scan, copy and create e-mails and multi-page PDFs. Built-in FARE™ 3.0 retouching technology helps to enhance your final images. And to save time, you can batch-scan up to twelve 35mm frames or up to four slides — either positives or negatives.

(it's thinner and smaller than the image... good for scanning documents, as well)
