Contracts expiring in 2012 and the lockout

How are the teams viewing the value of these contracts in light of what most of us see coming, that is to say, the owners locking out the players for probably a substantial part of the 2011-12 season? If there is a lockout, the owners aren't paying these guys.

So, are 2012 expirings of the same value currently as 2011 expirings in view of the fact that a substantial part of 2011 is probably going to be lost? If a team is making trades by using expiring contracts to help another team get rid of a longer term contract (e.g. Philly Iggy/Brand, or Clippers Davis/Kaman, etc.), wouldn't a 2012 expiring contract serve ALMOST the same purpose as a 2011 expiring?

Specifically, players like Chris Kaman, Boris Diaw, etc. They expire in 2012. If we get to the trade deadline, and there is no movement between the owners and players, and there likely won't be, because the players are too stupid, and it becomes increasingly obvious that the owners are going to bring it to a halt, then obviously those contracts become at worst, possibly an expiring contract for part of one season. Do you see my point?

In view of some of the ridiculous contracts passed out this offseason, I can't help but feel that there has been some degree of collusion between the owners to show inflated player's salaries and more losses to strengthen their argument to lock out. How else can you explain contracts like Memphis giving Gay the max? They have to be banking on a lockout or next season. I think they trade Gay at the deadline for expirings and future picks............if they can. Lowry getting almost $6 million per?????? Wes Matthews???? They're going to lock these guys out, and I am wondering if they are actually going to force percentage pay cuts as part of the package or keep them locked out until they accept a 10-20% pay cut across the board.

I'd like to read some discussion on this issue as we get closer to it, specifically in regards to building a championship team and using the lockout as a tool to make trades. What values do those 2012 expirings have at this time?

The 2011-2012 season is the lockout. OP has the years mixed up and made things confusing.

It's too early to think about contract situations until we see the result of the lockout. It is a good idea to have cap room after 2011, a team might be able to do more with the same amount of cap room than before if the league sets up a hard cap. But even with a hard cap there has to be a transition period.

Pardon me. You are correct. Fixed.

More with the same amount of caproom means teams would be likely to want to jettison those 2012 expirings before the end of this next season. So, would Chris Kaman's contract be worth the Clippers giving up their 2011 first rounder to get rid of him and get a 2011 expiring?

Here is a short list of players who expire in 2012. I left out rookie scale contracts for the most part, unless they were a substantial rookie that is likely to garner a substantial new contract. I also left out anybody that I felt teams would automatically decline their option for the 2012 season and they are viewed as essentially expirings this season. I did include a few players with player options that would likely exercise those options if 2012 is played out. I did include players with team options for 2012 that the team would likely exercise if 2012 is played.

    Mike Bibby 6.2 mill
Al Horford 7.14 mill (Rookie Scale)
    Kevin Garnett 21 mil
    Ray Allen 10 mil
    Rasheed Wallace 6.79 mil (retired)
    Jermaine O'Neal 6.2 mil
    Boris Diaw 9 mil
    Najera 2.6 mil
Joakim Noah 4.24 mil (rookie scale)
    Antawn Jamison $15 mil
    Jamario Moon 3.19 mil
    Jason Terry 11.4 mil
    Jason Kidd 8.5 mil
    Carmelo 18.5 mill (player opt)
    Chauncey 14.2 mil (team opt)
    nene 11.6 mil (player opt)
    Chris Andersen 4.2 mil
    Rodney Stuckey 3.8 mil
    Chrlie Bell 4.1 mil
    Chris Kaman 12.2 mil
    Mike Conley 6.48 mil
    Carlos Delfino 3.5 mil
