Inspired by the last second shot thread, here is something I've always wondered about:

If someones driving in the lane, the whistle blows for a foul like hand check or whatever, the driver always continues towards the basket and takes a shot trying to get the continuation basket.

Why do the defenders let them do this? Once the whistle blows wouldn't it be smart just to wrap the driver up or give them a hard foul. Why do they let them take a free shot, I mean its already a foul, so foul them again imo.

if u wrap the driver up he might flop and start crying for a flagrant foul.

Some folx's continuation is longer than others
LeBron you can foul him at the 3 pt line. . . . and he can take three steps and get continuation.

Hard to0 determine what the refs will allow

like match said, you risk the chance at a flagrant, but i do agree in making sure the foul is hard enough to eliminate the chance of the shot going in. Other times, like River said, you just never know if the refs will call continuation.

I've wondered that for the longest time too. Guys just freeze once they hear the whistle. I would at least put a hand on their arm or something. It's strange that I can't recall it ever happening.

Not going to fully dispute this, but I also saw it go the other way. Fastbreak, LeBron on Ginobili, LeBron starts his gather probably at the top of the key, or at least behind the free throw line, so he's definitely going for the shot, Ginobili swipes at him intentionally for the foul, LeBron takes his final step across the free throw line, elevates and throws it down. (It was quite ridiculous looking actually) However the referees wave it off, saying no continuation. It was CLEARLY continuation but due to LeBron's freakish, unearthly ability to do things no man should, he didn't get it.

    It was funny.
