I know we've talked a little about this new park. Damn, it looks cool. http://www.houstondowntownpark.org/ But, here's the cool part: they are having a contest to name the park. Woot. So this is pretty cool, but has the potential for a really unfortunate result: The Houston Downtown Park Conservancy, the folks in charge of building the new downtown park in front of the George R. Brown Convention Center, is inviting the public to name the park. "Tapping the public to name the downtown park was a natural decision by the Conservancy," said Nancy G. Kinder, Chair, Houston Downtown Park Conservancy. "The interest and excitement during our public input phase in 2005 was instrumental in helping us design a truly urban park that will be utilized by all Houstonians." According to the Conservancy's call for entries, name suggestions should reflect "the spirit and uniqueness of the new downtown park and, among other qualities, [should represent] Houston's diverse history, and communities and distinctiveness from a regional standpoint." So, basically, it needs to be a unique, regional, global, diverse, historical word or two. We guess that means "Park 1836" wouldn't work? And Hermann and Memorial are already taken. Wow, this is hard. The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18; the winning name will be announced at the park's groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 16. The person who comes up with the winning name will get an embarrassing amount of prizes: dinner for two at one of the park's restaurants, a collection of Astros merchandise and a framed political cartoon by the Chronicle's Nick Anderson. Submit your idea on the Conservancy's website, www.houstondowntownpark.org; by calling 713.238.8125; or by picking up a form at one of several YMCA locations. http://www.houstonist.com/archives/2006/08/21/name_the_new_do.php
How about Central Park or Midtown Park? Give it a city feel. We don't need anything cheesy like 1836 or whatever that NO ONE else in the world would know wth it means. Anything CENTRAL immediately gives it an 'important' feel. Midtown would be okay too
well..it's not really in midtown. it's in downtown. how about Downtown Houston Park? how about the Shi$*y Beatles. man, they suck. so it's not just a clever name.
